Allas Sak by Dungen

This is, without a doubt, one of the best psych-rock albums I've heard this year. If you know Dungen, then you know what they're capable of, and this is wonderful. Beautiful string arrangements, a guitar tone/style that you could honestly mistake for Robert Fripp, just an awesome album all around, go listen to this.

No No No by Beirut

i finally feel like i've delved into this properly, and it's honestly fantastic. such a chill chill album, but also like, aware of emotional nuances. like a lot of chill albums seem impossible, like no one feels that way, but this one is just so self-aware. do any of you have any feelings re: this album?

(also, that being said, still probably my least favorite beirut release, but w/e)

I like it quite a bit. I'm not sure where I'd place it amongst their other albums. I think The Rip Tide and Gulag Orkestar are my favorite Beirut records. No No No lacks some of that balkan influence that gave them their identity. I miss the brass a bit, but the songs are pretty strong on their own.

I saw them in Santa Fe last night. It was their huge homecoming show, and it was pretty wild to see how many people came out for it. I guess Beirut is Santa Fe's version of Bruce Springsteen.

better Springsteen to have than the Killers, i'd presume.

i actually have never listened to Beirut. any consensus on what the best one is?

I'd say start with the debut, Galag Orkestar.

For as big as Las Vegas is, they really don't have a good band to attach themselves to. What are the options, Killers, Slaughter, Panic! at the Disco, and some terrible bro DJ? that's rough

Don't forget Imagine Dragons /s

(but Killers and P!ATD are on my overall chart so it's actually one of the more represented US cities on there ...)

what's rougher, P!atD and 3LAU both find their roots in my high school, the former just a bit too far removed for me to have any kind of personal connection to them, but the latter pushed by just the kinds of people you'd expect. really makes my dislike of EDM all the more personal. ๐Ÿ˜œ i think Calvin Harris might be from Vegas? i have a good friend who was in one of his early videos, but i'm not sure if that's because he came to Vegas to do those shoots and peddle his music since we gobble all that up.

not that you asked, but i think the main reason a big city like Vegas really tends to have these very vanilla groups rise to the top is that there's so much transience except for a very rigid, conservative suburban base that's all master-planned. as opposed to having a city to go to that's a bit wild and unkempt and can foster some rebellion among the types of kids who would make a punk scene, we just have a lot of people having to play to broad bases of taste in that part of the valley or else heading up to the Reno/Tahoe area for college and trying to foster the music scene there, which i hear is quite DIY and close-knit, if not exactly to my taste.

He might be based there now, but Calvin Harris is most definitely Scottish.
