Skid Row by James Ferraro

final(-ish) verdict on this after listening to it a bit more in higher quality without all the skips is that i feel disappointed. on the one hand, there's this really good album playing almost, what, half the time? Ferraro's delivery on these R&B projects has varied in all sorts of strange ways, and i've loved that style, the opaque lyrics, creepy voiceovers, etc. but sometimes there's this weird like swagger to his voice that's annoying or insistent. what's cool about Ferraro's recent musical endeavors has been the weird nonchalance and ease with which he's delivered incredibly brow-beating, direct lyrical content. this album seems to have collapsed under the weight of his excellent recent stuff.

Gamelan Descending A Staircase by Arturas Bumลกteinas

this comes HIGHLY recommended. great electroacoustic gamelan from Bumsteinas, who put out the excellent Different Trains last year and definitely deserves your attention. there is also a shorter piece after the 50-ish minute main event that works from ambient and sparse to that great noisy clicky poppy business that you get on great electroacoustic records.

Yeeeeeeeee
This sounds like a dream come true, Tyler. I've always wondered why there weren't more variations of the gamelan formula (other than appropriation, which I completely understand). I haven't listened to this yet, but plan to ASAP.

Danny L Harle's "new EP" is two remixes of "Broken Flowers" that aren't as good as the original mix, "Forever," which I could take or leave, and a completely forgettable slow song somewhere in there. the two remixes are good, but it's kinda fucking dumb to market this sort of thing as anything new, imo. coulda been a Soundcloud link or two.

definitely gonna be checking this out too. Based on how I'm hearing it described, you may also be wise to check out

Bandcloud Guest Mix by De Leon

I know there's still a few weeks left, but what's everyone's favourite debut album of the year? I found that 2015 wasn't exactly the strongest year for debuts, especially compared to the rest of this decade so far, but that might just be because I missed a few gems. Any recs?

Apart from Kamasi Washington, I think my favourite debut of 2015 is this:

La Vie Est Belle / Life Is Beautiful by Petite Noir

De Leon - Bandcloud Guest Mix

this is a neat find so far, Gabe (about twenty minutes in). the Soundcloud page/my ears indicate that this is basically a sampler of untreated Southeast Asian music, no? if you're into this and willing to go big/haven't yet checked it out (Dust to Digital, so it's very probable you've at least seen it), check out:

Longing For The Past: The 78 Rpm Era In Southeast Asia by Various Artists

of course, these tracks don't have the fidelity that you hear on this mix, but the range is broader and the stuff is pretty incredible. fun fact, if i'm not mistaken, i once had words with Poe about this release, and he was frustrated they didn't organize the set better, so he downrated it to hell ๐Ÿคฃ

My favorite debut may just be:

Summertime '06 by Vince Staples

Like, gahh damn. I just listened to it actually.

if it counts, Elysia Crampton's debut was the best of the year. sticking just to major-ish album-length releases (though if i weren't, this list would be even longer), we had great debuts also from Jlin, M.E.S.H., Fetty Wap, Future Brown, and Rabit.

Yeah pretty sure the mix is (mostly) untreated, but the individual pieces are just really immaculately selected and mixed imo (I imagine they're trimmed down from their original length because gamelan tends to go on for like infinity, but it's a really seamless mix) and there's a pretty neat outro made up of a more modern progressive tribal ambient take on gamelan sounds that juxtaposes the very natural feel of the larger part of the mix nicely.

Ah yes that comp has been on my radar since I went and grabbed everything from Dust/Digital. I'll move it to the top of the queue ๐Ÿ˜„
