Meh. Kind of sounds like a mediocre America or Bread album. The title track is a really good song, but the rest of the album is exceptionally unoffensive and relatively uninteresting. It's not a bad album, but it's just really unremarkable. _________________ Progressive Rock
I've always found Thy Catafalque an impressive venture. Tamás Kátai is able to throw all kinds of things together into one pot and create something incredible. Perhaps what's most impressive about Thy Catafalque in general, and especially on this album, is not necessarily that Kátai plays around with a bunch of different styles (from metal to electronic to ambient), but that all of these styles often seem to be occurring simultaneously. It's this gigantic mixing bowl of musical styles, and somehow it works. This album might be the best I've heard from Kátai, it's quite the journey. The sequencing of the songs is nearly perfect, everything flows together smoothly making the front-to-back listening of this exceptionally rewarding. With dashes of metal and ambient, hard-driving drums, riff-heavy guitars, this makes for a unique and exceptionally impressive album. _________________ Progressive Rock
I love the parallel I've heard drawn between Bill Fay on this album and the Old Testament prophet Jeremiah. Both were living in a time in which the culture around them was all about love and peace and joy, while they were running through the streets proclaiming the end. For Jeremiah it was the judgment and destruction of Israel, for Fay, it's the end of the hippie era.
Fay's songwriting is so good, he has a haunting, Nick Drake-like voice, and his lyrics are equally as haunting. They're introspective and biting, and that makes for an eerie listen. The electric guitar, especially as much as it kind of shreds on this album, would feel out of place on a folk(ish) album, but strangely it doesn't. This is certainly one of the more eclectic, interesting albums I've ever heard. _________________ Progressive Rock
Considering that their self-titled album is as good as it is, I was hoping this would be just as good or better. I think Edgar Broughton Band gets overlooked in the world of psych rock, but this album is just not that great. It's alright, there's a couple cool things here and there, but it just doesn't work as a cohesive album. The humor is there, but it's not as good, and the theatrics are just campy and a little over-the-top. There's so much going on here, it's hard to take it all in at once. Dalriada do folk metal about as well as you can do it, I've heard plenty of folk metal that feels off, the folk instruments feel out of place or feel shoehorned in, but the use of flute and violin on this album is excellent and it fits in perfectly. In general, this album is musically fantastic, it doesn't stay the same for long at all, each song switches up tempos and rhythms with such ease and fluidity , it's impressive. The harmonies are tight, the guitar work is excellent, this is just a really musically absorbing album, you can get lost in the technicalities if you really wanted to. This is, without a doubt, one of the better metal albums of the year. _________________ Progressive Rock
This album has such a mysterious feel to it, it's intriguing. There isn't much information out there about this band, which kind of furthers the mystery, and the music is very dark. It's black metal but with scary, muffled chants as well as blasting guitars, varying tempos and off-kilter rhythms. It's agonizingly beautiful, it sounds like an album you'd stumble upon lost in some dark forest somewhere, it's hard to describe, but it's quite an interesting album. _________________ Progressive Rock
Warm, relaxing, welcoming, and weird, somehow all at the same time. Juana Molina's voice mixed with psych-y reverbs and strange arrangements makes for an exceptionally interesting and simultaneously strange experience. I don't know that I could pin a genre on Molina, it's equal parts jazz and electronic, but whatever it is, it's really cool. _________________ Progressive Rock
Decided to start my morning off with some old-school country music. Dolly Parton has one of the most incredible gifts for melody in country music this side of Willie Nelson and George Jones and a voice to match it. The title track is a classic and this album shows that Dolly can handle anything you throw at her, ballads, rockers, whatever, she can handle it. _________________ Progressive Rock
Intronaut make a pretty unique style of progressive metal with a little bit of everything to it. Heavy riffs, weird time signatures, insane drumming, jazzy breakdowns, catchy vocals, it's all here and it's all very technical which is what makes it interesting. Specifically, the drumming needs to be called out, because it's incredible. Danny Walker's drumming on this album is some of the most creative and impressive drumming I've ever heard on a metal album. And I mean ever. Walker's drumming fits in perfectly with what the rest of the group are doing and it serves as an excellent complement. This album has a bunch of little quirks to it, and that's what makes it unique and such an engaging and intriguing listen, an excellent piece of songwriting.
Highly recommend to Gowi, dbz, Repo, anyone who likes some good progressive metal. _________________ Progressive Rock
Throughout this whole album, Abigail Williams are doing a fantastic balancing act. Each track blasts in with thunderous ferocity and powerful screams, and then melodic sections that are equal parts beautiful and haunting. The guitar work is excellent throughout this whole album, it's all old-school black metal and it's excellent. It's not all aggressive speed either, Abigail Williams is able to create a mood and feel to the album that makes this miles above mindless walls of guitars. If you dig Gorgoroth or Emperor, you'll like this, it's one of the best metal albums of the year. _________________ Progressive Rock
