For the guy who released the King Krule stuff, this is quite a departure, and I applaud him for that. There's not a single note of guitar on this entire album, it's all kind of hip-hop-inspired electronic music. Sometimes it kind of stagnates, there are ideas there but they never really take full form, but on occasion there are songs that you can really get yourself lost in, songs that surround you and envelop you. Overall, it's not a bad album, it could've been a lot better, but it's not bad at all. _________________ Progressive Rock
This was quite a good psych-pop album. Very spacey, ethereal, really intriguing stuff. The guitar work is really good, it's not necessarily technically impressive, but the tone is excellent and fits in with the psych feel really well. Really thick, full guitars with solos that have a great melodic sensibility, really relying on the whole "less is more" technique of guitar, which I really appreciate and which fits in quite well with the overall feel of the album. It's not a mind-blowing album, but it's certainly an entertaining one. _________________ Progressive Rock
Cheatahs move away from the heavier psych-rock sound they had on their last album to a much more diverse sound on this album, and that's where the strengths of this album are. Their last album was a great psych-rock album, and I give Cheatahs a lot of credit for not making a carbon-copy of the last album, they're furthering themselves. There's tinges of early-90s shoegaze here, stuff like Swervedriver is pretty evident, and even a bit of krautrock too. There's a heavier reliance on synths than guitars (though the fuzzy guitars are still very prominent) which shows a lot of growth from Cheatahs. _________________ Progressive Rock
Lemmy's death inspired me to listen to some Motorhead, I haven't really visited their discography in a long time for whatever reason, and this was the first album I had ever heard by them, so naturally I gravitated to this first.
Part of Motorhead's killer three albums (this, Bomber, and Overkill), I think this one's the second-best, behind Overkill. It's still a fantastic album, it's classic Motorhead, and obviously the title track is one of the best metal songs in history. It's very similar to the other two albums in style, it's Lemmy's gruff voice, Eddie Clark's insane guitar, all totally in your face. What sets this album slightly apart is the production, which is a lot crisper and better. As an album though, it still rocks and is firmly established as a classic of the genre. _________________ Progressive Rock
Yea, this is still definitely my favorite Motorhead album, and just one of the best, most ferocious, raw metal albums out there. The title track is just an incredible song, second only to "Ace of Spades" in their repertoire in my opinion. This is also, I believe, Eddie Clark's best album, the guitar work here (especially on the title track) is blazing fast with a full-bodied tone. If you need a Motorhead album to listen to, this is it. _________________ Progressive Rock
Letters From The Labyrinth by Trans-Siberian Orchestra
I recognize that TSO is kind of the prototypical over-the-top prog rock band, but most of the time, I like the stuff they put out. Granted, a lot of it is Christmas stuff, and they do it well, but on occasion they put out non-Christmas stuff, and it's really hit or miss. Beethoven's Last Night was a great success, an excellent, coherent rock opera that incorporated some really cool Beethoven and Mozart pieces. This, however, is mostly a miss. It's disjointed, this is their first non-Christmas album that isn't a rock opera, and it really feels like just a collection of different songs. Instrumentally, it's well done, as they always do, but aside from that, the lyrics are exceptionally cheesy, and the songs are fairly forgettable. I can't say I'm shocked, but I was hoping for a bit more. _________________ Progressive Rock
This is definitely one of the more interesting albums I've listened to recently. Leila's production on this just feels like it's from another planet, in a good way. It's equally dreamy, ethereal, noisy, and off-beat, often times all at the same time. That might sound like it would make for a chaotic, dissonant album, but somehow, whether by magic or something, it works really really well. It somehow all comes together cohesively, I don't know how, but it does. The vocals that are used mixed with Leila's production mesh nearly perfectly, and the music, while unorthodox, is exceptional. Without a doubt, one of the best albums in the doom metal/stoner metal genre. Somehow, the monotonous repetition is neither monotonous or repetitive. It's always pushing forward, always moving, this gigantic, monolithic work of art. The guitar work is excellent, it's not just chunking slow riffs (though they're their), but even the solos have a blues tint to them, there's melody and soul in them. It's just one continuous hour of one glorious song, and it's some of the best doom metal you'll ever hear. _________________ Progressive Rock
Some of the best rocksteady/reggae you'll hear. Really relaxing, the vocals on this are just fantastic, especially on songs like "Soul Power" and "I Hold The Handle". The vocals are reverby and light, but soulful. This is a sit on your deck in the summer and chill out kind of album. Catchy, relaxing, and just fun to listen to. _________________ Progressive Rock
