Ugh... I really want to like this album. I really want to. I swear. There are some highlights I did enjoy, mostly the more misty, atmospheric sounding ones and the more melodic, upbeat ones, but there are also so many wastes of times on this album. Like the second track on the album, Radiator, is so bad. It is just awful and you cannot convince me that it is any good otherwise. Not a single sound is pleasant to the ears. Easily Richard's worst track he's ever made. I just want to find a person who actually enjoys the track. I'm waiting for some shit to be thrown for some ridiculous reason. Also, the second to last track, White Blur 2, is way to long for such an uninteresting loop. I just hate the more clunky, repetitive songs on here that sound completely void of any effort or emotion. Trim those tracks (which is, like, almost half the album) and you probably got a solid score of about 80.
I tried.

...I'm going to give this another shot tomorrow. I've been thinking about it too much.

This is my favorite ambient album and I'd place the score somewhere in the high 80s. I do like the second track, so I'll try to explain why. This is a great album to play while you're sleeping or trying to sleep. If I'm really struggling, I can put on Track 3 (aka "Rhubarb") and know that I won't be awake by the end. But where Track 2 (aka "Radiator") really shines is when it's played while you're in that half-asleep state. It's so discordant and weird that it really enhances that loopy feeling you get when falling asleep. It's like dream rocket fuel.

I just finished my second attempt at the album. I developed a HUGE appreciation for the second CD, not so much the first, and probably because I'm listening to it in the morning when I'm wide awake. Makes sense, though.
Continuing my adventures into the Swans discography. This one comes from the box set reissue of White Light From the Mouth of Infinity and Love of Life. Love of Life is probably my lesser favorite of Swans works so far, but is nonetheless stellar. Every instrument sounds oddly bright and crisp. Michael Gira's singing style is very odd, yet intriguing. I prefer White Light over this, though.
Found a way to listen to this album without resorting to YouTube. Allmusic.com had the best description for this album: it was something along the lines of, "the follow-up to Loveless that MBV never made." I got it from that flow chart croala posted in that shoegaze thread. There are a lot of interesting looking albums on there. The ones that sound more like Loveless are harder to find, though. I like using Spotify when listening to new music, and going to YouTube or illegally downloading files are usually my last resorts. This album desperately needs a reissue, the cheapest CD was, like, $45 used which is just shit. And I'm not really the picky kind of guy for first editions/presses. Back to the album. Yeah, it's like an Americanized Loveless. It's a little lengthier than its mentor, including a really good 12 minute instrumental I wish MBV could've done on Loveless (no, not like Glider, something easier on the ears) (never mind, Loveless is perfect the way it is). The second half of the album was probably the better half. If this gets a reissue, I'll definitely snag a vinyl or CD copy. Not as perfect as Loveless, but still a very good album.
Pure emotion. This, along with The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me, are albums of pure emotion. Excellent passion through the singing, lyrics, and instrumentation. A very personal album, it's like I'm reading the diary of the lead singer. It's an album I can see myself listening to over and over again.

Glad you liked it man! YFW is pretty different, as is Daisy, but this may be up your alley:
