I'm not disagreeing, but I'm curious as to what you guys think is wrong with the mixing.

It's quite obvious Madlib sent over a beat (sounds several years old actually), Kanye went over it, and then Kendrick probably e-mailed his (slightly unnecessary) verse afterwards. There's a lack of cohesion between all the different segments. The vocals certainly didn't need to be that loud either... but the individual elements are all pretty good. I just don't think they were strung together very well.

Speaking of lack of cohesion, I keep feeling like none of these new Kanye tracks gel together ๐Ÿค” Despite still believing that Kanye has made the best album of the decade so far, I'm just not looking forward to SWISH. I don't like 'FourFiveSeconds', 'Only One' and 'AllDay' at all, and I think 'Real Friends' sounds like something that would go in the scrap pile of 808's & Heartbreaks. I'm not sure what I think of the new track yet, but it's certainly underwhelming considering the powerhouses behind it.

These are the problems with the mixing. More to the point, my main issue is your second one. The vocals are so loud that there might as well not be a beat underneath them most of the time, and neither of these rappers' flows are very interesting to me in isolation, as much as that might send people into seizures that I would blaspheme Kendrick Christ. That could have been solved with even the simplest of interplay with the beat, but it was window dressing.

Stringing them together is the point of mixing. I personally think the individual parts aren't very good, but they wouldn't have been so obviously bad were they mixed competently and didn't sound like three different mediocre songs fighting for space.

Like I said in my post, I realize these are unfair criticisms given that this song isn't supposed to be a single or most likely even supposed to reflect much of anything about SWISH and really is there to showcase how Kanye's flow is sounding lately while also generating some buzz for his "collaboration" with Kendrick. It's a lazy execution, but it's not like it had high ideals beyond just bone-throwing. Doesn't mean I don't find it sonically displeasing. I think the biggest sin this song committed was making Kendrick's vocals loud enough that I realized that the timbre of his voice is really annoying, which I've never heard before, and I hope his other music doesn't have a glass shattered effect now that I've been so irked by it lol

oh my god the hook is pretty terrible.

the beat is too lean and simple to get stretched out that far, imo. the mixing is also terrible on it, which makes the beat seem even more tired.

yup

The lyrics are solid, but nothing special. The song feels like Madlib, Kanye and Kendrick just copy-pasted together. That's still worth listening to, because they're all great artists on their own, but this track is lacking the chemistry and special sauce needed to make it a true banger. Who knows whether this will be on it, but I'm not really hyped for SWISH anymore tbh.

EDIT: hadn't seen Hayden's post when I wrote this - sorry for the rather duplicative points

Kendrick's voice sounds way too gritty/raw, the beat sounds almost sounds like it was made through a phone, and yeah, they weren't strung together very well.

I get the idea that most (if not all) of these tracks aren't going to appear on SWISH, especially the ones released last year. I wasn't as hardcore a music fan in 2010 as I am now so I didn't experience the original GOOD Fridays, but it seems like that's how it worked back then as well. Stylistically none of the tracks fit together and, at least to me, it seems like he's decided that Only One/All Day/etc isn't the sound he's going for. Part of me thinks he was dropping those songs just to gauge people's reaction.

Maybe that's just me hoping all of these are demos that's he's dropping before the album though. The new one definitely sounds like a demo, and apparently it was recorded awhile ago. I don't have high expectations for SWISH, but it wouldn't shock me if Kanye dropped something completely unexpected and spectacular either. Pusha T seems excited at least.

Not to a jerk, but the saddest thing is that he seemed like a nice guy, yet super-douche Don Henley is still alive.

Oh well, at least we still have Joe Walsh. He's decent.

ehhhh the Kanye verse is fucking endless, not particularly good.

To each their own, I liked it just because it's less similar to the Kanye that what we've been getting of late I think, but I also disliked Yeezus and still am not quite sure how to feel about MBDTF, so I'm not the best judge. And on top of that I'm less bothered by long verses (see: Lupe's "Mural" and Chance's verse on "Hello" being two of my absolute favorite rap moments of last year), so this might be a taste thing more.

Definitely agree on the rest of what you said here though.

The Gerogerigegege's Art Is Over. Also probably his Live Greatest Hits but it's just my favorite example of public masturbation set to tape and by no means the only one to exist. If outsider music in general should be on there, then Sensational's Loaded With Power, Lucille Cataldo's "Hairdresser" single, and David Liebe Hart's music come to mind. Also, I wanna play that Ed Hunter game very badly now.

heh thanks I'll check these out. This project is making me go slowly (even more) insane and this sounds like stuff to aid that process . I'll credit you. Still going by joy_circumcision on rym these days?

yea sources say it's pretty much exactly how you'd imagine a (very) 90s game with creative input from Iron Maiden

I unironically enjoyed this very much. Occasionally reminded me of certain parts of this. Grazie
