'Round About Midnight was the first album by Davis on Columbia, where he would stay for 30 years. It features saxophonist John Coltrane, who had not yet become an icon. The interplay between the two here is great, with Davis' melodies being answered by Coltrane's energetic solos. The rhythm section of Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones never wavers.
A true jazz classic. One of many Davis albums that are necessary for anyone who's a fan. A beautiful piece of work. _________________ I'm leaning on the threshold

3 songs (the last 3) were recorded with Duane Allman before he was killed in a mororcycle accident. The effect of losing him would be felt throughout their long career, which continued until 2014. After Eat A Peach, they had one more great album in them. Eat A Peach is almost a classic, and would be better had they released a single instead of a double album. "Mountain Jam", (which, along with 2 other tracks, are from the famous Fillmore East concert. At the end of the Fillmore album, you can hear the beginning of this song as "Whipping Post" fades out.) clocks in at a whopping 33 minutes, and takes some doing to listen to all the way through. But it was a necessary part of the album.
Otherwise, this is great. The first 3 tracks were recorded without Duane, and are as good as anything they did with him. "One Way Out" and "Trouble No More" are also from Fillmore, and the last 3 with Duane, particularly Dicky Betts' "Blue Sky", are excellent.

One of two essential Dave Edmunds albums (Tracks On Wax 4 is the other). Edmunds and Rockpile shine on this set of songs which vary from 50's rock ("Git It" and "My Baby Left Me", which sounds like it came straight out of Sun Studios) to great cover choices (the definitive version of Bob Seger's "Get Out Of Denver", Graham Parker's "Back To School Days"), straight up country, and even a Rogers & Hart Song ("Where Or When"). The original songs are great, too. Having a songwriter like Nick Lowe in the band doesn't hurt. This is a fun and fast collection, one of the underrated albums of the 70's.
I saw Edmunds on this tour (they opened for Bad Company at McNichols Arena). They rocked, and the songs from this album were great. Edmunds has been working in Sweden with my old lead guitarist from 13th Floor fo the past few years...check out A Pile Of Rock Live. I'm so proud!

This is Van Morrison's 2nd solo album after leaving Them, and the follow up to the record that brought us the eternal torture that is "Brown Eyed Girl". It took some time for this to be recognized for the classic it is...it took 33 years before it was certified gold. The album is like nothing else. It's a mixture of folk, jazz, and Morrison's blue eyed soul, recorded in a freeform atmosphere. The songs are all excellent, built around the amazing "Madame George".
Missing is the hit single that he was always able to put out with ease, but that's okay. Astral Weeks is a beautiful album, without a single weak moment on it. An underappreciated classic from a very appreciated artist. _________________ I'm leaning on the threshold

A House is like a very poor man's U2. The Irish band has a lot of good melodies, and say what they think...just without the ability of Bono & The Edge. I Am The Greatest is their 3rd album, and is their most interesting. Dave Couse is not much of a singer, but he is creative. "Endless Art" is a list of dead famous people throughout time. The title track is actually a stab at the cost of being famous.
The band is good, and there's enough melody to keep it interesting. Pass on "Creatures Of Craze" and "When I First Saw You" and you'll be fine _________________ I'm leaning on the threshold

If your idea of rocking out includes fiddles, flutes and tin whistles, the The Chieftains is the band for you. Formed in 1962, these guys play about as trditional as you can get, Irish folk style. They're still at it, now over 50 years. 3 (their 3rd album, surprisingly) is considered a classic. In addition to flutes, fiddles and tin whistles, they also play concertina, uilleann pipes, bodhran and bones, and while none of them sing, they do bring in a lilter for a couple of songs.
"The Trip To Sligo" is the high point here, but it's all interesting and very powerful stuff. Get your Irish on. If the last 2 albums didn't do it (Van Morrison, A House), The Chieftains will. _________________ I'm leaning on the threshold

The Del Fuegos albums are all out of print...so thank God for this. The album covers picks the best from the band's best albums, The Longest Day, Boston, Mass., and Stand Up, which were released between 1984 and 1987. The Del Fuegos were from Boston, and one of the more underrated bands of the 80's. They had one sizeable hit, "Don't Run Wild", but they were an excellent band.
Led by the Zanes brothers (Dan and Warren), the Fuegos music is highly listenable. Kinda bluesy, a little dark, not too heavy, not by any means light. If you missed out on them then, you can catch up now. This is really good stuff. It's a bit long, but it's worthwhile. _________________ I'm leaning on the threshold

Another Boston band. They were produced and heavily influenced on their first two albums by J Mascis, which led to them being better known as Dinosaur Jr. Jr.. Sleepy Eyed is their 5th album. Their debut was spotty, but the next 3 albums were excellent. Sleepy Eyed is a bit of a letdown from those. Not that it's bad. Singer Bill Janovitz is not the best in the world, but he's more than capable. The band has a sharp, jangly guitar sound and good enough songs to hold interest throughout. Standout tracks are "Tangerine" and "Summer", although the rest all have something going for them.

Peter Gabriel's solo albums from 1977 through 1989 were mostly excellent. Shaking The Tree gives a very well chosen view of the highlights from that period. All the big hits are here, as well as some should have beens. You'd be just as well to have his 3rd and 4th self titled albums and So (his masterpiece), but this is a good place to start with him, and it gives a good overview of his career. And it's hard to argue with being able to have "Solsbury Hill", "Biko", and "Games Without Frontiers" on the same disc.

To say that Mercury Records did well by Dinah Washington would be a huge understatement. This series was released in 7 volumes, covering every song she recorded from 1946 through 1961. Volume 2 is 3 discs, 53 songs (7 previously unreleased and 13 that were only available on singles) and includes extensive liner notes and even lyrics to every song. And Washington, who was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1993 as an early influence, deserves every bit of the detail. She was one of the truly great R&B singers, with an amazing voice and soul. She was a perfect singer...always on key (and they didn't have autotune back then) and with more personality and soul than most who have come since. If you're a fan of early R&B, pop and soul, then you will love this.
Offstage, Washington had her troubles...she was married a whopping 8 times and was obsessed with her figure, which led to her death in 1963 at the age of 39. She was found by her last husband, NFL star Dick "Night Train" Lane. She had overdosed on precription diet pills and alcohol. But her career, which spanned 20 albums and countless hits, deserves the massive packaging that Mercury gives her. This series is beatifully done, and necessary for fans of her music. _________________ I'm leaning on the threshold
