Matanza are self-professed "countrycore" stylists who sound like the bastard children of Johnny Cash and Motorhead. Their (Portuguese) lyrics are pure poetry and are mostly devoted to drinking, fighting and fucking. The English translation of this album's title is "Music For Drinking and Fighting"...and the title of the lead single (Pe Na Porta Socko Na Cara) translates to "Foot To the Door, Fist To the Face". That should tell you pretty much all you need to know...
The Legendary Pink Dots is probably the one band from my charts which fails to get any attention at BEA, and undeservedly so. Neo-psychedelia is one term that comes to your mind if you want to describe their music with one word, however, keeping in mind they've already released over 30 studio albums, depending on the period/line-up, you will find there traces of multiple other genres, most notably industrial, neo-classical and electronic.
I would especially recommend their music to fans of Krautrock, Pink Floyd, Syd Barrett, psychedelic Beatles, Porcupine Tree, Current 93.
The Maria Dimension is probably one of their most well-known albums, released in 1991.
The Tale of Princess Kaguya
It's one of my favourite albums, and I actually added the album to this site. There's only two votes so far.
It's a film score album for the titled movie, a Studio Ghibli animation, composed by Joe Hisaishi. He's a very popular composer amongst the Asians and fans of Studio Ghibli, but this little gem of his is a particularly underrated one. Maybe it's because it is one of his newer works, I don't know. But in my humble opinion, even considering all the classics he's made, this is my favourite. It's just too beautiful.
Listen to it, especially if you like film scores, classical music, a little bit of traditional Japanese music and just beautiful music.
This 2013 effort should be checked out by every fan of
- powerful female blues-inspired vocals,
- early Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds bloody ballads,
- trancey etno rhytms,
- with some psychedelic guitar on top.
The story itself is reason enough to give this a listen.
Cobus Potgieter, South African YouTube drummer, made a band via YT auditions, then flew them to California to write and record this piece of original music. I really like the result.
Released in 1975, then re-relased after Eminem used a sample of "I Got The.." in his breakout hit "My Name Is".
Labi Siffre seems to be incredibly underrated on the site. British homosexual poet, singer, songwriter. Dreamer, Down, and Another Year are all really great songs but the whole album is a really good listen. I suggest ya'll give it a try.
