It's an alloy of zinc and gallium. Gallium is a metal that melts at 86 degrees. When this alloy gets to that temperature, the bonds that hold the gallium atoms rigid break, but the bonds between the zinc atoms are still strong. The zinc atoms allow the metal to keep its shape, but just barely.

And I'm pretty sure you could spread it on toast. The zinc won't cause any problems if you ate it. And I've heard of people on the internet swallowing gallium, for whatever strange reason....
