I sort of started to touch upon my thoughts for this album in skype earlier, but essentially it can be simplified into my perception that these guys excel as musicians in every facet except for actual songcraft. The pieces here are varied, wild, and not necessarily inorganic in their eccentricity and experimentation, but I kinda feel like the under all the intertwined layers, technical proficiency, compositional complexity, and veritable shmorgishborg of instrumental variation, the songs themselves feel surprisingly empty to me; if you stripped these songs down to their barest essentials I don't think you'd be left with much, like the whole thing is an intricate labyrinth of (admittedly intermittently gorgeous) bells and whistles that ultimately leads to a kind of underwhelming payoff. Every so often I feel like UneXpect touch on something genuinely interesting all the way to its core, and seeing as they have no trouble with the rest of this whole "making music" thing, those highlights are very good, sadly they just don't occur with enough frequency or consistency to put enough substance behind the undeniable style of the whole affair. I will say though, the moments that did hit me hit me hard enough that I'm gonna check out their other stuff to see where else I feel like they touch on gold, and I am definitely glad I was exposed to this, seeing as at the very least it was a pretty wild and interesting ride.

This was the last album I could find that was assigned to me. I listened to it. It was a pretty groovy and fun experience. I enjoyed it, but not particularly infatuated with it.

Oh I just saw this! I haven't heard the Missy Elliot yet and I'll skip around the songs on that to see if any catch my ear but otherwise I'll just listen to this one then. 😜 Good call on both of these, by the way.

that's actually probably a good way to do that seeing as that one's technically a singles collection (which I think is appropriate for Missy seeing as she's way more of a singles artist imo, or at least her albums tend to be kinda so-so with a few incredible cuts scattered throughout) But yeah lemme know what you think!
The musicianship here is undeniable, but the songs themselves are pretty hit or miss. Seems to be equal parts overtly melodic and "pretty" country-ish folk-ish bluegrass-ish ballads and super fun jazzy versions of the same. I found the later mode infinitely more enjoyable (though the other bits didn't mar the album by any means). Basically when this thing sounds like fun string-plucking jamming with minimal studio polish as opposed to a boring incarnation of that with way too much polish, that's when it really gets me.

I can always dig a 70s-style throwback album, and Spidergawd do that really well. I love the guitar on this, the tone, the effects, not to mention the skill with which it's played. Spidergawd go full-throttle the whole album, constantly moving with complicated pieces that sound spacey and airy, while simultaneously rocking. The final three-piece suite is pretty great, it all flows into each other really well. There are a couple tracks that fall a little flat, but in general, this is a pretty cool album.
