10. The Comeback
11. Roll 'Em Pete
12. Smack Dab In The Middle
13. One O'Clock Jump
This historic concert was recorded in 1957. This 1989 release features 5 songs that were not on the original album, making it all the more sweet. I'm telling you...you pretty much can't go wrong with Count Basie. This show includes the classics "One O'Clock Jump"., "Evenin'", "Lester Leaps In"...every track is superb. Even if you're not a fan of this type of music, you've got to love this. Very easily, one of the best live albums ever recorded. Don't know what more I can say about it.
Basie's band is as good as it gets...these are some of the greatest jazz players of the era. And Basie's piano is amazing. If you dig jazz, you have got to have this. Nuff said. _________________ I'm leaning on the threshold

11. Ceiling Fan In My Spoon
12. Frank Mills
13. Mrs. Robinson
Lemonheads is the domain of Evan Dando and a revolving cast of friends. It's A Shame About Ray is their 5th and best album. With Julianna Hatfield of Blake Babies, the album clicks and runs along like a well oiled machine. Great songs like "Buddy" (originally "My Drug Buddy"), "Alison's Starting To Happen", and a cover of the Hair tune "Frank Mills" make this a great listen. The cover of Simon & Garfunkel's "Mrs. Robinson" at the end just makes it all the better.
Lemonheads broke up in 1997, but started back up in 2005. They've released 2 albums since, including 2009's Varshons. _________________ I'm leaning on the threshold

Tricky was a rapper in the group Massive Attack. This was his solo debut, and although he's been making albums ever since, he has yet to really top Maxinquaye. This album mixes hip hop, soul, electronic, dub and rock into a very interesting musical hangover. This doesn't feel like being at the club last night...it's more like waking up the next morning and wondering what happened. The vocals of Martina Topley-Bird offset the haziness, and a great batch of songs makes it worthwhile. Maxinquaye is smart, sonic, moody, and at times, really really cool.
Tricky has tried to find this place in his career since, and continues to record with varyingv success. But Maxinquaye is one of the more interesting albums of trip hop. It really is worth a listen. _________________ I'm leaning on the threshold

RAINBOW
RISING
1976-POLYDOR
Produced By MARTIN BIRCH
1. Tarot Woman
2. Run With The Wolf
3. Starstruck
4. Do You Close Your Eyes
5. Stargazer
6. Light In The Black
Ritchie Blackmore founded Rainbow around himself and a band called Elf, who had opened shows for Deep Purple. For the second album, Rising, he replaced all of the Elf members except for, smartly, one...Ronnie James Dio. Rising is the best of the Rainbow studio albums, and although it doesn't have a smash on it like "Man On The Silver Mountain", it's the best and most consistent set of songs the band ever released. Dio sings like a true madman, and tracks like "Run With The Wold" and "Stargazer" are terrific. Three of the tracks are over six minutes long, but they're mostly worth the time. There are more popular Rainbow albums, but this one is the best. Pretty solid from start to finish.
Doogie White, Graham Bonnett and Joe Lynn Turner have all sung lead for Rainbow, but there's nothing like the Dio years. Rising is easily the best of those years. _________________ I'm leaning on the threshold

DOCUMENT
1987-IRS
Produced By SCOTT LITT & R.E.M.
1. Finest Worksong
2. Welcome To The Occupation
3. Exhuming McCarthy
4. Disturbance At The Heron House
5. Strange
6. It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
7. The One I Love
8. Fireplace
9. Lightnin' Hopkins
10. King Of Birds
11. Oddfellows Local 151
Very few bands record what can be considered a masterpice. R.E.M. almost got three. Document is very close to that. Their 5th album was not only their commercial breakthrough ("The One I Love", "It's The End Of The World"), but it rocks harder than anything they'd done beforehand. "Oddfellows Local 151", "Lightnin' Hopkins", and "Finest Worksopng" are all really great songs. This album never gets old, and shows why R.E.M. has survived and flourished for so many years. Document is a great album.
This was also the first time you could really understand a lot of what Michael Stipe was singing, which is an added plus. As big as these guys are, they're still kind of underrated. Which, I guess, is what they were looking for in the first place. _________________ I'm leaning on the threshold

TEENAGE FANCLUB
BANDWAGONESQUE
1991-GEFFEN

1. The Concept
2. Satan
3. December
4. What You Do To Me
5. I Don't Know
6. Star Sign
7. Metal Baby
8. Pet Rock
9. Sidewinder
10. Alcoholiday
11. Guiding Star
12. Is This Music?
The biggest torchbearers of Big Star's sound has their shining moment here. Bandwagonesque is a great collection of jangly, Chiltonesque songs. "The Concept" and "Star Sign" are the highlights, but it's all very good stuff. Scottish rock hasn't sounded this good since the early days of Rod Stewart. The Big Star comparisons (their next album was called Thirteen, and this has actually been referred to as Big Star's 4th) are warranted, but they take the best from that band. Bandwagonesque is a must have for any fans of Big Star. A power pop gem.
TFC still records and tours, and they've been close to the success of this album. It's also been famous for beatingout Nirvana's Nevermind for Spin's Album Of The Year in 1991. It's that good. _________________ I'm leaning on the threshold

I'm a really big fan of this album as well both because of the great guitar sound and because of the georgeous songwriting which indeed has links with big star's Alex Chilton!

12. Closed Captioned Radio
After their glorious fun filled album Life Begins At 40 Million, this sounds like a complete downer. At first. But listening more carefully, this is actually a maturing for this New York band. The songs still hint at the craziness in the carachters, but it's taken more seriously...and becomes more dangerous. This is a great band, and Billy Campion is a great frontman. And while nothing jumps out at you as it did on the previous album, this is just as good or better. Heavier, darker, and lyrically better, with the same swirling choruses that marked their debut.
This advance copy also features a second disc, the first single "Failing Systems". It doesn't add anything really at all. _________________ I'm leaning on the threshold

KILLING JOKE
EXTREMITIES, DIRT & VARIOUS REPRESSED EMOTIONS
1990-NOISE
VARIOUS PRODUCERS
1. Money Is Not Our God
2. Age Of Greed
3. The Beautiful Dead
4. Extremities
5. Intravenous
6. Inside The Termite Mound
7. Solitude
8. North Of The Border
9. Slipstream
10. Kallyuga-Struggle
Killing Joke are highly influencial industrial players who have been around for most of the years between 1979 and the present. Extremities is their 9th album. Jaz Coleman and company did not see a lot of success from this, but it does remain a vital part of their catalog. Recalling a lot of Joy Division, Extremities is dark music that wants you to dance to it. They're very guitar driven, and heavy. It's not always easy to listen to, but it really wasn't meant to be.
This is one of those bands you have to really be a fan of to get into. Regardless, it's a very well made album and if you have the patience, you can grow to really enjoy it. But it's also very easy to dismiss on the first listening, so patience is required. _________________ I'm leaning on the threshold
