Unknown Pleasures should be ranked far high above that horrible piece of popish indie rock called The Suburbs.
The Suburbs is on the same level as Linkin Park.
But, yeah, UP is a classic, if it wasn't for charts it would be on a top 20, *see Rate Your Music*

I agree. I like Arcade Fire but Suburbs is nowhere near anything Joy Division have done.

Both Joy Division albums are solidly in my top 10.

I don't know if this is super controversial, but Strangeways is the best Smiths album.

It is probably more controversial for me to say that I stay away from anything Morrissey as I just don't care for his musical stylings.

I don't know how controversial this will be with this crowd, but as far as rock music goes, 2000s > 1970s.

In fact:

1990s > 2000s > 1980s > 1960s > 2010s > 1970s

Roughly. Haven't heard enough from the 50s to include them.

I would have agreed with you if I hadn't just surveyed the 1970s and realized that actually some of rocks greatest albums were in the 70s.

Now if you are already painfully aware of that and it's just a matter of opinion, then sure. I most agree with you too.

Also define "rock".

Are the Beatles "rock" ?

Are Arcade Fire "rock" ?

Also, very interested in your 2010s list of rock, cause, uh... Imma need that soon.

Ego doesn't play a role with the quality of music.

There are egotistical bastards who write fantastic music (Billy Corgan), and there are people who at least appear to have a "normal" ego and also write fantastic music (Kurt Cobain).

well one's ego can still certainly have an influence (positive or negative or just neutral) on how they approach music. Exhibit A: I doubt Kanye would've made 90% of what he's famed for without that ego to drive him

I agree... there's like 5 Smith's songs I like, but mostly just can't get over his vocal style. Unique and interesting as it is, I just want to punch the guy... like if I transported back to a time when Morrisey was first doing music, I'd totally punch him in the face when he first sang like he does now and told him to stop and do something less annoying.

Sorry. It's an opinion and yes I realize it's mostly wrong... but that's why I won't ever be a hardcore Smith's fan... the vocals and the band don't mesh well. Vocals could be all by themselves without the band and have the same effect (I often feel).

Oh, I totally agree with this.

I guess when I said Ego doesn't play a role... I wasn't disagreeing that Ego exists.

I just have a hard time finding connection between a band's "Ego" and the quality of music. Unless it's a break up of a band, like Beatles or Smashing Pumpkins. But that had to do with relationships... not the music itself.

Abbey Road, the last thing Beatles wrote together, was absolutely fantastic... yet their Ego's were all over the place.

Let me rephrase... I am not sure Ego is causation for music to be good or bad.

I don't believe that anyone who commits suicide would've had a normal ego.

Read inflated ego... sorry I couldn't find the right word so I said "Normal". The interviews I've seen with the guy, I never felt he was full of himself.

Also just to be clear, I'm talking about self-esteem, not guilt vs social norms type ego conversation.
