Debut LP from a Slovenian hip hop/electronic trio. Easily the most hyped release in Slovenian underground, based on some of their singles and gigs in 2015. Completely disconnected from the rest of hip hop scene in Slovenia, both musically and lyrically, with stories that don't really make any sense whatsoever, it's hip hop that hip hop fans here don't actually like. I, like many, find them ridiculous, but still so happy they exist.
More of the same from post-retirement Masta Ace; elaborate, three-dimensional storytelling, with a nostalgic bent and a welcome willingness to portray the difficulties we all face with dignity and subtlety (even if I can never decide whether the skits are a vital part of his universe-building, or a forced distraction from the music). The beats are soulful and practical, never getting in the way, and Ace's crystal clear enunciation and deceptive rhyme schemes give him the air of a wise elder whose memoirs can teach us a lot about our own lives. That said, it's impossible to shake the feeling that he's a little overly comfortable doing this sort of thing, and it would be interesting to hear him take a few more risks, but he's carved his own lane (he was a good kid in a mad city back when K. Dot was still rocking dental braces) and remains one of hip-hop's most intelligent and likeable voices, even as he approaches 50. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs.
