And two more albums:
- Zeichnungen des Patienten OT by Einstürzenden Neubauten (nr 46 on the overall BEA list of 1983): I can appreciate some of the latter albums of this band (the song Pelikanol on their album Silence Is Sexy is great) but in general the experimentations and weird themes on their first albums stand in the way of something that is even comes in the neighbourhood of musicality. Apart from the title song which is not bad I didn't find a lot of good on this album Seth (and Grzywa)
- Perverted by Language by The Fall (nr 47): Many people of whom I like most of the music they put in their charts like the Fall but I don't:I just don't like the way Mark E. Smiths Sings/chants. Nevertheless two of the tracks I like most of them are on this album: Smile and the very bass-induced I Feel Voxish but this is not enough to put it on my favorites of 1983.
And here is my final post for 1983 with the final two albums I listened to:
- Shown No Mercy by Slayer (nr 49 in the overal BEA top chart of 1983): This is the first album of Slayer and many people don't like it very much because they haven't reached their best form at this moment but I like it: after the many hair metal albums of 1983 I listened too, this one is a real with some really good trash metal/speed metal tracks on this album. It's a bit similar to that other debut album that came out in 1983: Kill 'em All by Metallica, but where Metallica moved on from there, Slayer is still a bit stuck in the hell & fire lyrics but that doesn't matter and especially this one is good fun, so one for my final top chart of 1983.
- Dazzle Ships by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (nr 50): OMD has made some fine hits and two of them are on this album: Telegraph and Genetic Engineering and also Time Zones is not bad but the rest is a bit too lightweight to include in my personal top chart of 1983.
So this ends this tour of 1983 and here is my conclusion (with at the beginning the BEA rank and at the end my rank before I started listening and my rank after this listening session):

And here is my introduction to 1988. Like I already stated I won't listen again to the albums which already are part of my personal top Chart of 1988 so I will only listen to the others and see if they can make it to my personal chart.
Here are a number of stats: I completely agree with the top two because they are my top two as well with two absolute classic albums: Daydream Nation of Sonic Youth and Surfer Rosa (which I prefer to put together with Come On Pilgrim and the two of them together are on rank 17) by The Pixies.
All in all, there are already 17 albums of this year in my top chart of 1988 but 7 of those don't appear in the overall BEA top 50 and not even in the top 100 which I find a bit strange from the best album of the Godfathers (nr 162), and good albums of Iggy Pop and Screaming Trees. But the price for the most underrated album of 1988 goes to Struggle For Pleasure of Wim Mertens (15th in my chart and 858 on the overall BEA cart of 1988): some fantastic minimal music of, I agree, a Belgian artist.
This year is the first year that features some rap/hip-hop albums of which in general I'm not a fan, but I'll make an effort.
Here is the list I will start from with at the start the BEA rank of 1988 and at the end my current rank:

I already listened to two albums from the list of not yet listened albums:
- Spirit of Eden by Talk Talk (nr 3): I must admit I already tried to listen to this album which is very much acclaimed by many members of BEA and at that first listen I didn't really liked it because I thought it was a bit morose. But at this second listen the quality of this album is starting to filter through: this album is so melancholic and filled with lots of detail that I now really start to like it. In any case an album for my personal chart
- It Takes a Nation of Millions To Hold Us Back by Public Enemy (nr 4): I started to listen to the first album and I'm sorry I can't bring myself to like it (I already know a few tracks from the radio so it's not that I'm unfamiliar with it). To me this is also one long track of the same stuff. So no: not for me.
The next album to listen to will be another rap/hip hop album from NWA, so I'll give that one a try as well.
Here are the next three album of 1988 I listened to:
- Straight Outta Compton by N.W.A. (nr 6 on the overal BEA top chart of 1988): This the second hip hop/rap album I listen to from 1988 and I really tried to like it but I don't: this album was to me just a big cliché.
- Tracy Champman by Tracy Chapman (nr 7): Her two hit songs of this album are certainly good and also the rest of the album is not bad but not good enough to make it to my personal top chart of 1988.
- Nothing's Shocking by Jane's Addiction (nr 8): I discovered Perry Pharrell when I bought the Porno For Pyros album when it came out in the nineties and I still think this is one of the worst albums of that decade. After that I also bought Kettle Whistle from JA and didn't like it either. So this album hasn't converted me to liking JA more: For some people this band was the start of the grunge movement but in my opinion this is just pompous metal with bad songs, bad singing and bad guitars. The only exception is Mountain song which is not too bad. Sorry JA lovers.
Next album is more promising: Isn't Anything, the forebode of Loveless by My Bloody Valentine.
And here are some more:
- Isn't Anything by My Bloody Valentine (nr 9 in the overall BEA chart of 1988): Of course I know MBV from Loveless and this indeed seems to be the seed that was sown to come that seminal shoegaze classic. To me it is a bit less good than Loveless but there are some good songs on it and worth an introduction into my personal top chart of 1988.
- Operation: Mindcrime by Queensrÿche (nr 11): a concept album (aargh) by a prog rock metal band (aaaaaargh) of a band I originally thought it was a hair metal band (aaaaaaaaaaaaaargh). But all in all it was not too bad but I do have the impression that they really try to sound as a rip off of Iron Maiden (especially in the Needle Lies and there's even a reference to Hallowed be Their name in the most epic track, Suite Sister Mary, which in all its bombast are also the most interesting tracks on the album) except that the latter is able to tell an interesting story in one song instead of 15 and that their song writing and their riffing is much better. Musically there is not a lot of originality in this album but as I said it is better than expected but unfortunately not good enough to be in my top chart of 1988.
- If I Should Fall From Grace With God by the Pogues (nr 13): I own the compilations The Best of The Pogues and the Rest of the Best which together cover most of the tracks on this album and contain the two best songs of this great band: Fiesta and especially Fairytale of New York; But the whole of the album is great and the drinking atmosphere created by the raspy voice of Shane MacGowan is not getting in the way of good song writing. This is a punk influenced folk album or the other way round and the combination works really well. So definitely an album for my personal chart of 1988.
- I'm Your Man by Leonard Cohen (nr 15): this album suffers from a really cheesy production which especially harms the first three tracks and I Can't Forget but I'm Your Man, Take This Waltz and especially Tower of Song can't be killed by any kind of bad production so I'm gonna include this album anyway in my personal top chart of 1988.
The next album to listen to is Rattle and Hum by U2.
Next batch of 1988 albums:
- Rattle and Hum by U2 (nr 16 on the overall BEA chart of 1988): this is indeed a weird combination of a regular album and a live cover album and I must admit I'm not a bit fan of neither because they bring out the gospel side of U2/Bono which is not their side I like best. The real exception and an absolutely gorgeous track is the last one on the album: All I want is you. I don't think I will leave out many U2 albums out of my year top charts but this is one of them.
- Viva Hate by Morrissey (nr 19): I already owned the two great hits of this post-Smiths solo album of Morrissey via the compilation album Bona Drag. But the rest is also good also there no real standouts. In any case one for my personal top chart.
