I'm especially a fan of Californication and By The Way so not so much from their earlier albums (it's always good to mention that because there are really two types of RHCP lovers) and I'm listening to the new one now and I think it's a great album, especially the last half of it.

I would say there are more than two types. Let's see... those who love BSM and everything before, those like you who love Californication and thereafter, and those who love the Peppers no matter what. Me, I'm a Frusciante-or-nothing fan. Love every album with him on it, not interested in anything without him. I do not care for pre-BSM, never much into One Hot Minute (it has its moments, though) and can't get into anything post-Stadium Arcadium.

So I finally listened to the whole album... and starts out pretty good and ends alright.

Some Chili Pepper albums that I later loved I remember being that way. Californiacation's later tracks grew on me for example.

Might be one of my favorites from 2016 to be honest... like top 20 possibly.

Totally agree with the comment that Frusciante made the band amazing. The band was alright before and after. I actually do like One Hot Minute though.

How about Mother's Milk? Frusciante's debut?

I like some pre-frusciante stuff. I wouldn't say any of those albums were fantastic, but I would say it is worth getting into "what hits?" There's some good stuff like:

Higher Ground
Behind the Sun
Me And My Friends
Fire (cover)
Get Up and Jump (mostly cause the slap bass, even if repeatitive)
Knock Me Down
If You Want Me To Stay (cover)
Taste The Pain
Catholic School Girls Rule (decent punk song)
Johnny Kick A Hole In The Sky

John Frusciante possibly is soley responsible for taking RHCP from being a party band to something rather beautiful. His vocals and guitar playing are just amazing and they will never be the same without him. It'd be like The Beatles continuing on with out Paul or John. They could do it, but that synergy is amazing. Don't get me wrong... I think why John in the RHCP is best is because he brought an artistic element to the pop element... and that bittersweet mixed world is what gets my goat. I like John's solo stuff... but it often is a bit too artsy fartsy and doesn't have enough of a pop element to really be that interesting.

Anyway - The Getaway is a bit better than I originally thought.

Ah what the hells... here's a play by play response:

01. The Getaway - I get a small Cure feel from the guitar work. It's an alright song.

02. Dark Necessities - Easily the best track of the album, in my opinion. Mature, yet definite RHCP sound.

03. We Turn Red - Fantastic drum and vocal work. Bass and guitar are ok, but nothing ball busting. Do like the duality of the song.

04. The Longest Wave - Possibly most impressive guitar work I've heard from Josh. I do like some of the effects and such he's done but this is the first song I've though... huh, this guy can play/has more than a background/ambient role.

05. Goodbye Angels- ending was cool, the rest, meh.
06. Sick Love - reminds me of Elton John somehow, and not the piano, rather the vocal
07. Go Robot - meh
08. Feasting on the Flowers - Cool guitar work at intro, other wise, meh, probably grower.
09. Detroit - like how rough the mix/tone decisions is are were can be... hehe.
10. This Ticonderoga - I liked how this was like Jeckyl/Hyde.
11. Encore - meh
12. The Hunter - I kind of connect with this Fatherless cliche
13. Dreams of a Samurai - above average

Overall... I'm not familiar with Josh's voice... but I think often there are female backup vocals that joined the album... and I liked that. Those would be these lady's from the Wiki:
Anna Waronker – additional vocals (1)
Beverley Chitwood - vocal solo (13)

I also like how this album isn't a sound wars album. The bass isn't distorted... the guitars are subdued (something I've noticed is Josh's thing I suppose, but totally miss the wailing beauties from John).

I have finally listened to this album actually (The Getaway) and I'm impressed. Josh has found his own groove. And yes I agree that OHM has its moments definitely. This great band has made a ton of amazing music.
