The Game, almost by virtue of just being around longer than most everybody else, has become one of the West Coast's most trusted voices, a ridiculously - boringly? - consistent gangsta rapper who seems to embody his city like nobody else. Over the years, his rapping has gotten sharper and more efficient, but his lack of flashiness (as well as his not completely undeserved reputation for straight-up jacking the flows of other, more distinctive rappers) has probably held him back in terms of continuing to keep a high profile outside of a loyal legion of fans. Jesus Piece was solid, both parts of last year's The Documentary 2/2.5 were solid (although I'm not really sure the exhausting length did him any favours), and this is solid. In fact, this one is probably the stand-out of the lot - whilst there's little in terms of quality of distinguish them all, this one is more concise in every way, managing to stay short and filler-free whilst also refusing to budge from its running theme (in so much as 'life in Compton' qualifies as a "running theme" for a hip-hop album). Some well-chosen guest verses from some of the city's younger stars, including effortlessly smooth Problem, the relatable and charming Boogie, and the manic AD, among others, also help to cultivate that necessary West Coast vibe, and whilst it doesn't ever hit the heights of YG's recent masterpiece, it's another valuable addition to the recent series of excellent releases from the region. Of course, what's most impressive is that this album is supposed to be a soundtrack for a television show; Game could easily have phoned this all in, but he takes on the challenge with guns and wits blazing.
