It's taken ages for this one to sink its teeth into me, but it's finally getting there. The first few times I tried, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was just listening to a more tasteful Lana Del Rey record (and, to be honest, that feeling hasn't completely disappeared quite yet, especially during the more expansive, airy moments), which seemed like an awful shame given how much I loved and still love July, but there's still something decidedly earthy and substantial here to cling onto buried beneath the extra layers of strings. It's certainly a lighter record than her last (even with the occasional sinister drones), but with Marissa Nadler it's all very much relative; a pizza might be healthier than a doner kebab, but it's still a fucking pizza/Picnic at Hanging Rock-influenced slice of seeping melancholia. As always, her songwriting doesn't offer easy thrills, and it does take some familiarising before her undoubted - if extremely subtle - pop instincts shine through. Will certainly land in the top half of my 2016 chart.
Yeah I gotta agree, it's a grower. While still not as good as July (specifically lacking the sense of emotional urgency that one had) it definitely works in it's own way, going for an overall hazy, dreamy sound rather than focusing on any specific songs imo

Fantastic collection for their early stuff... I don't think I really like an early album of theirs to be honest (pre-1968 didn't have fantastic albums), but this... this is gold:
