This is lots of different shades of fantastic. Many rappers Ro's age have trouble sounding natural over trap beats, but Z-Ro is wise enough to mix up the palette a bit, making sure to include plenty of the synthetic soul that has always been his forte, and his commanding, confident delivery and natural, almost effortless melodicism mean that he sounds great over pretty much anything. At times in the recent past, his releases have leaned a little too self-serious, but reeling back the ambition and concentrating on rapping about what he feels comfortable rapping about - namely haters, baby mamas, and dead homies - has seemingly reenergised him, and he sounds like he's having fun throughout here; it's damn infectious. Coming in at around 50 minutes over the course of thirteen tracks, the record doesn't outstay its welcome either, and with every track feeling tight, concise, and distinctive the album as a whole is extremely satisfying and one of the most downright accessible albums of the year. It's not a huge departure from Z-Ro by any means, but to hear him doing what he does best, and doing it with this much energy at this point in his career, is really refreshing. Definitely a top ten hip-hop release for the year so far, and could quite easily stay there for me. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.
