Continuing my trawl through uncool, earnest, mid-1980s, pop-rock minor masterpieces now, with Lloyd Cole's knowing, geeky, jangly Rattlesnakes, an album that shares fellow Glaswegians Orange Juice's fondness for The Velvet Underground, but dispenses the lo-fi disco basslines in favour of a more polished, albeit subtle, country rock flavour. Like Edwin Collins, Cole softens his accent, and his voice has a Bowie-esque flourish, giving everything here real (if slightly geeky, insular) presence. Some excellent pop songs are interspersed throughout (the opener and closer; 'Forest Fire'), surrounded by confident, endearing, though somewhat muddy college rock. Probably more consistently great than Orange Juice's (very similar) self-titled effort from the same year, but lacking the incredible highs of that album ('What Presence?!'; 'I Guess I'm Just a Little Too Sensitive'), this is nonetheless an excellent slice of Scottish indie-pop that one could happily fall in love to, which seems to have been all but forgotten in recent years. Deserves repeated late-night listening. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.
