Some very good British boom bap. Luca Brazi is on the beats, which draw on old soul and blues rock samples (among other things) for a familiar feel, and he injects everything with just enough energy to keep the record from falling into lazy throwback territory. The pair share raps, and Represci (formerly Jester Jacobs) is easily the star of the show, with a nasal flow and a number of memorable images, his background in standup comedy apparent in his genuinely hilarious lyrics. Luca Brazi is a highly competent spitter, with a nice line in rugged, unpretentious, normal-guy-around-town speak, but is largely too indistinct to really stick in the mind. Guest spots from entertaining UK rappers Benny Diction, Mnsr. Frites, and Archetype are welcome, as is former Cali Agent Planet Asia, who shows up twice with a reliably nimble flow and necessarily texture-varying American accent. This is probably a little too predictable to challenge SonnyJim's Mud in My Malbec in terms of my favourite UK hip-hop albums of 2016, but it's still very, very good, especially in those moments when Joe Represci has control of the mic. Will no doubt make my top 50 for the year. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.
