Here's a bit about my favorite records of the 80s. Lot's of really tough decisions.
1980: The Clash - Sandinista
For the longest time, London Calling was my favorite album by The Clash, and pretty much by any band ever. With time my feelings have generally shifted towards the band's sprawling triple album, Sandinista! This funkier, dubbier version of The Clash was not quite as consistent, but they made up for it through ambition and mood. Where others whitewashed the sounds of Jamaica and other parts of the world, The Clash utilized them respectfully.
1981: Birthday Party - Prayers on Fire
Manic, aggressive, deranged post punk from the likes of young Nick Cave and Rowland S Howard. A predecessor for the likes of Scratch Acid and The Jesus Lizard.
1982: dB's - Repercussion
This was a tough decision which I could've gone with any number of records. Repercussion is power pop perfection highlighted by perfect melodies that simply never grow tired.
1983: New Order - Power, Corruption & Lies
Opening with what's likely my favorite song ever recorded, New Order somehow emerged from the tragic death of Ian Curtis to become one of the definitive new wave/synth pop acts of the 80s. Peter Hook's bass lines continue to hit my musical G-spot.
1984: Cocteau Twins - Treasure
Simultaneously setting the groundwork for shoegaze and dreampop. Elizabeth Fraser's voice is simply transcendent. Each listen fills me with feelings of pure euphoria.
1985: William Onyeabor - Anything You Sow
The joy I get out of Onyeabor's funky electronic afropop is beyond explanation. Simple, genuine, uplifting, and containing a magic I've rarely heard elsewhere.
1986: Go-Betweens - Liberty Belle & the Black Diamond Express
Jangle pop at its very best. This is probably my favorite Go-Betweens album and also maybe my favorite jangle pop album ever made.
1987: The Smiths - Louder than Bombs
It's a compilation, but it was also my gateway into The Smiths. While I love their individual albums, The Smiths were undoubtedly a great singles band whose b-sides were often as good as the a-sides.
1988: Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden
It's wasn't love at first listen. I honestly didn't get it. Thought it was a bit slow and too indirect. And then it suddenly all hit me. This album has pulled me from the depths of the darkest places and will continue to do so.
1989: Julee Cruise - Floating Into The Night
Essentially the soundtrack for Twin Peaks. The team of Lynch and Badalamenti composed dreamy pop songs with shrouded in mysterious reverberated tones. Cruise's voice is the perfect fit. Sensual, distant, breathy. _________________ http://jonnyleather.com

one of the absolute greatest big band albums. Maddening, chaotic, and explosive but never straying too far from a central melody. It's like the most beautiful car crash.
early experiments in field recordings and tape manipulation. What at first appears to be simple nature recordings eventually twists and contorts into increasingly warped iterations thereof. Cricket chirping at 1/8 speed followed by eskimo heartbeats? Yes please.
another work of early field recording, but this one focuses almost entirely on urban New York, brilliantly capturing the hustle and bustle of the city alongside the natural music found therein in the form of street musicians and the like. It's a really creative juxtaposition of "conventional" street music recorded alongside the music that can naturally arise from the ambient noises of an active city.
one of the earliest musique concrete recordings, and also possible the most bizarre album of the 50s. A fair portion of this is radio play interviews with experimental artist Henry Jacobs as he talks a little bit about his work but mostly about totally unrelated shit, and then a huge chunk of this is wacky sound collages that sound at least 30 years ahead of their time. Towards the end of this album the interviews and sound experiments collide, and it's like the interviewer and interviewee both dropped acid and just kinda continued the interview and managed to record the whole thing from their perspective. Awesome shit if you have the patience and if you're the same kind of crazy as me.
the Queen of fado in her most legendary performance. In none of her recorded or live work (or indeed, in most anyone's) did she hit quite the level of just pure vocal passion found here. I can't speak a word of Portuguese and yet I still manage to get hit full force with all the longing and lament in every syllable. One of those records I want to take with me to the afterlife.
a relatively early experiment in classical music heavily augmented with electronics. What makes this interesting compared to some of the more challenging works by John Cage and friends, this one almost embraces pop-sensibility in its electronic implementation. Whereas most early electronic classical at this period was relentlessly abstract, this shit is downright catchy, which honestly is just as hard to pull off if not harder given the limitations of the technology of the time. As cool as that all is in principle, the music itself just sounds damn good too. Technically it's an EP so it's quite short, but in a lot of ways this predicts electronic music's slow creep into mainstream consciousness, (which makes even more sense when you realize that this guy, despite being born and living his early life in Indonesia, is part of the Dutch collective The Institute of Sonology, whom you may know as that collective with that one guy who made an effing acid house track in 1957. I'm convinced that the entirety of The Netherlands is a country of space magicians from the future)
recordings of a bunch of 11-13 year olds in inner-city Baltimore just doing their thing with drums and words, and it's really incredible for a lot of reasons that I wont go into just yet because after Skinny does his Wu-Tang thread I'm doing one for this so ima save the good stuff for that.
