Definitely Kinks here. Later on, when the Beatles went into their rapid musical evolution, they would win, especially in the '65-'66 time frame.
The first Beatles album was still mind-numbingly simple, plodding three chord rockers. The Kinks wasn't any more complex, but it was the truly groundbreaking album of that time, laying the groundwork for both punk and metal.
This is no contest.
