this is how i've come to feel about the genre too. for me, there's way too much slide show soundtracking in post rock, and it's chalk ful of cliches and gets boring fast. even with the bands i've liked releases from, there's usually only an album that i enjoy.

Nothing. As in any art form, the classic era is when the form is at the height of its means. So I should think the late 90s is the classic era of postrock (think Tortoise, Labradford, Godspeed indeed, Rachel's, Gastr Del Sol, For Carnation, anything Pajo, Mogwai possibly). If anything, postrock might have entered its "postmodern" age.
