Thanks for turning me onto this! I've heard some Joe McPhee but not this one. Love twisted jazz guitar (or should I say, twisted guitar on a jazz album?).

Glad to share! It's one of those ones that I lucked into finding and totally get evangelical about (that youtube upload is mine so I could play it to people in plug.dj)

Have I introduced you to this yet:

Broadcasting From Home by Penguin Cafe Orchestra

oh you haven't, I've heard the name around but never got around to investigating even though it's one of those ones that I've heard from enough people to where I really should be. I will get on it this weekend though, it is time

Diamond Life by Sade

I keep on going back and forth on this album. My prejudice against it is largely due to Smooth Operator, and that I played it in a high school band, and we thought it was jazz before we knew what jazz was.

If I get away from thinking of it as faux-jazz, and hear it for what it is: chilled out r&b/soul/pop played on real instruments, it's a pretty great album. I still need to start at track 2, though. I've only recently discovered Love Deluxe, and I find it easier to like, because it more firmly resides in r&b with no allusions to jazz.

I completely hear you, rkm. As a punk growing up in the 80s, that song was pretty much anathema. lol. Now, I LOVE this album, but damn it was hard to get past my bias and outright aversion to smooth Operator. That song used to make me puke. lol

Damn, If I was making a top 10 hit songs from 85 Smooth Operator would have been number 1. Love that track. As well as love that album. Though Love Deluxe and Lovers Rock are significantly better.

There's more than 1?

There are some albums I enjoy from the 80's, but not many that blow me away. I'm currently reconstructing my overall chart and even one album from the 80's will be lucky to make my chart. Maybe something from The Cure or The Jesus & Mary Chain...we'll see.

Definitely a low point in music for me, which is why I abstained from voting.

1984 would probably be the big contender against 1980 and 1988 for me. So many important, standout records and personal favorites came out that year! Zen Arcade, Purple Rain, Let It Be, Reckoning, Powerslave, Double Nickels On The Dime, After 5 Clash, Diamond Life, Psalm 9, Tooth And Nail, My War, Broadcasting From Home, The Painted Word, Defenders Of The Faith... such a great year.

I've realized recently that 1984 became one of my absolute favorite years very quietly. Agree completely with many of the albums you mentioned. I'd add Ride The Lightning, Grace Under Pressure, and Nature Unveiled. Zen Arcade became one of my favorite records in 2017.

I mean it is the best record of 1984. So. Good on you for seeing the objectively correct opinion.
