yes, but the beat of Happy Mondays is different: it's "baggy", which is (as I just learn from dear internet) influenced by this particular beat:

See also the first Charlatans album for a typical baggy beat.

So I believe we have to draw a limit between genres, and we can't really say a baggy sound is a britpop sound

True, but they didn't have only one beat. They used many different ones. Same with britpop groups.

This, for example, is certainly pop coming from across Channel/Atlantic, But this is not โ€œBritpopโ€ for me: ๏Š

Well, it would fit the part of the description of being influenced by British Rock of the past. Specifically the use of the organ. There hasn't been that much organ since the 60s British groups like Traffic and Procol Harum and those kind of classic rock British groups. Which this song is obviously going for. And I really don't see where this is Pop at all. The best rock has always had nice catchy tunes. But nowadays people seem to call anything with a good Melody pop instead of Rock. This could be because today's Rock has such rotten songs that maybe people think Rock isn't supposed to have a good tune. I don't see how a song that uses rock guitars, Rock drumming, Rock organ could be anything but Rock. But I agree it doesn't sound like britpop because it isn't self-consciously upbeat and cheerful. It could just as well be American rock. But it is all about the sixties though. I really like it too.

I just relistened to both Black Grape albums, and even though at the time I thought they were both about the same quality, years later I can see that Stupid Stupid Stupid is clearly superior to the debut. The music is much more adventurous on the second album and more trippy and psychedelic, whereas on the first album the music is just bland and unexciting and it never ever changes throughout the entire album. And it just seems really dated. It's like the lamest kind of early 90s dance rock. But I found stupid stupid stupid is a completely different story. It's pretty fun and exciting to listen to. Lots of cool guitars and weird noises that keep changing all the time and make it sound kind of wild and crazy and psychedelic.

Interesting. I was assuming the first one was better because it appears on more lists of the best 90s albums. I listened to Stupid, Stupid, Stupid today. Really good fun. I liked the vibe of the record and a few tunes stood out. The beats were harder than I expected (though I don't normally listen to this kind of music). I was wondering if you see this album as similar to the Chemical Bros/ Prodigy at all- for it's mix of dance beats and rock guitars? Maybe this album sort of sits in the middle of britpop and big-beat.

Yeah, the Charlies probably weren't the most typical of britpop bands due to their rootsier/ groovier sound- but I think they had enough in common with britpop between 94-97 to call this band britpop at that point. This is my favourite of theirs from s/t album. Love the piano on this one. Though I remember the album as being a bit inconsistent.

For me it's more pop than rock because it is more danceable than rebellious or angry. Though I agree it is rock instrumentation. I know its not heavy metal at least ๐Ÿ˜•

Edit: also, you can hear a big change in sound from "the only one I know" to this one. Less funky groove more Stonesy swagger.

This one doesn't require too much in depth analysis really...

All change by Cast

Some over-excited reviewers at the time seemed to see this as the natural successor to the La's. Probably given it has La's basest John Powers promoted to front man. It's a similar 60s orientated album, but overall it doesn't have the same attention to detail or authenticity as the La's. That said there as some decent tunes. Mostly the singles but a couple of others as well. About half of the album is pretty average for me though still inoffensive.

"Sandstorm" is a simple tune but sounds great turned up loud. They also manage a wistful and pretty ballad in "Walk away" (which memorably was used to soundtrack England's exit from the Euro '96 football tournament at the hands of Germany ๐Ÿ™ )

I think they sound like the Hollies (what I know of them). You could really call it Power Pop as well as Britpop due to emphasis on simple hooks and crunchy guitars.

Hmmm... That's a good question. I don't really see it as the same genre as Chemical Brothers and The Prodigy. It is too song oriented and singer oriented, which makes it closer to rock. But Shaun Ryder's singing makes it seem pretty britpop. But they use more Electronics and sampling than Britpop does. Most of the Britpop I've heard is pretty much guitar music. Unless there's just a lot that I haven't heard yet. I think you're right, I guess it falls somewhere in between. But one thing that does make it similar to The Chemical Brothers is the way they like to use a lot of psychedelic sounds and effects. And the way they like to just throw everything into the mix. Which I really love. The more the better. As far as I'm concerned, the more you toss in the better. Heh heh.

I'm gonna listen to the La's next. Believe it or not, I've never heard that album before.

Yeah I'm noticing you like things that are quite full on ๐Ÿคฃ

I guess it was a lot to with the psychadelic sounds that reminded me of The Chemical Brothers. Glad I listened to the album. They do have a very distinctively British character. I think a recent band, the Sleaford Mods have a similar kind of "loud and funny British man on the street sort of vibe". In a good way. Though musically they are different to Black Grape/ Happy Mondays.

Oh good. Hope I've not over-hyped it too much! Let me know what you think. I'm going to write up something on Giant Steps tomorrow. Now that is a crazy album!!!

Nah. You can't overhype that La's album. It's just fantastic indie pop!

Hey, Have you guys talked about this ...

Screamadelica by Primal Scream

album yet? I think Yann may have mentioned it on the 1991 thread. How it was boring at times. Just got it from the library this morning for the car, and.... it sounds kind of dated! I used to love this album back in the 90s, but I'm wondering if any else feels the same way. I'm wondering if that whole Madchester sound just hasn't aged that well. Or maybe I just need time to get back into it ๐Ÿค” . The songs and sounds are there for sure, I should love it but something seems off. ๐Ÿ˜•

I agree. I love Primal scream but not this album. You're right it sounds very dated, even when I first heard it in the late 90s it sounded unspectacular to me. But then came Vanishing Point and xterminator and Evil Heat, and it was a totally different story. All those albums are really high up in my charts which shows how much I like them. Just not this album. Heh heh.
