Now there is no way to quantify what people "deserve" outside of sales and how well they do in the market. Now for example I may think, that say, Carly Rae Jepsen produces artistic masterworks. Am I right? How would you quantify how right I am? There is no way to do it. You may not like Carly Rae Jepsen, but there is no way to objectively say she is a poor artist. Even when I say art in my comments I am comparing what I am commenting on to how it meshes with the structure of Western Classical music, which is simply something I personally like. Most people hate that sort of music however, so their perceprtion of art is different. People simply have different perspectives and the only way to quantify what you "deseve" or how "legendary" you are is how well you do on the market. If you don't agree, please elaborate rather than rudely dismissing intelligent peoples views as merely "stupid".

But popularity is surely just a measure of how popular something is, not how legendary?

Speaking of legendary, we seem tantalisingly close to one of our famous discussions on subjectivity and objectivity. It's been too long Laughing

You're right, there is no way for you to objectively quantify that Carly Rae Jepsen is a good artist. You don't need to and there's no reason to try.

Some people think she's great, some think she's garbage, some think she's mediocre. All of them are right and all of them are wrong.

I mean, if we're going to use sales to determine what artists are truly great, then I guess we should be talking about how the Backstreet Boys, Shania Twain, and Celine Dion are some of the greatest artists in the history of music.

Nick Drake can suck a nut though, he never sold anything so obviously he's complete and total garbage.
