I'm going to try those Hugh Masekela and Miriam Makeba albums. The two that I listed are the only ones I know, and that's only because they had huge hits in the United States back in the 60s. Actually all the ones on my list I only discovered because they became someone known in this country for one reason or another. I never would have discovered any of these on my own but rather I just happened to come across them in my normal listening habits. Hugh Masekela had a number one hit with grazing in the grass in 1968, and I happened to have it on one of those K-tel albums that were compilations of pop hits that I found in a Bargain Bin. He's actually just jazz, but there is a real genre called South African Jazz I guess. And also, Manu dibango had a freak hit in the seventies with soul makossa. It was like an early Disco hit, and has been used in many American songs since then. So the point is, you could actually discover Regional music even if you don't have a particular interest in it. Hopefully all the albums people listed here will pique my interest and make me want to explore more.
I totally agree. I mean I probably only know 20 to 30 world albums ok and only 10 really well though, to be honest. But, I agree - all of that came naturally to me, but to be fair it was while in Los Angeles, where I worked with Israelis, Colombians, Mexicans, Salvadorians, Germans, Englishmen, and Swedes.
Also those weren't albums, rather songs.

Here's another album that imo is very much a world album although it's by Philip Glass. It's been a while, but I think it's purpose is kind of to show the clash between traditional and modern societies.
EDIT: SAMSONITE - I was way off. It's like 10% world music, and mostly not. Memory failed me. Still a cool album imo.

Hayden - your 50's Carribbean list is awesome! That Voodoo Drums album cover is easily the coolest album cover I've either ever seen or seen in a while.
I suppose all I really was trying to accomplish was to get more interest in non-Western music, but I'm realizing the the competition side of this will really likely have to take place when we get to sub-genre's? Because the "genre" is so vast, there won't be any similar votes.

I think I'll tally up the lists here soon... I might even count each list given even if multiple from a single user since there's a lack of lists given so far. Top 10 lists (as long as the list was numbered) will have the same weighted amount given, even if multiple lists from a single user (I hope that makes sense).
