I have Crohnโ€™s disease and got an infection that triggered a flare-up. Iโ€™ve spent so much time in the hospital since I was diagnosed in 2011 that itโ€™s kind of like my second home lol

Currently I'm eating a normal diet, but in the past I've tried the low residue diet briefly, and then for a long time a diet in which I avoided nuts, seeds, beans, corn, fried foods, and refined sugar. Neither of them really made a dent, probably because I have a particularly severe manifestation. I've failed on most drugs by now and I've been looking for clinical trials. But ironically it was antibiotics I was receiving as part of a trial I had just started that probably gave me the infection, which then expelled me from the trial ๐Ÿ™„

I do my best with stress ๐Ÿคฃ

We would almost have enough people for a BEA chronic illness support group haha... You, me, and whoever else wants to join. ๐Ÿ˜„

As you can probably tell, I got tired of going through the RYM canon album by album a good while ago. I've also gotten tired of scoring albums to rebuild my overall chart for the moment. So I locked the chart up and I'm going to bury the key for a while. Same for my decade charts. Instead I'm going to do what a lot of people have been doing and go through music year by year, at least until I get bored of that and need a new project ๐Ÿคฃ

But instead of picking a year and concentrating on it like Mercury or Tilly, I'm going to do a speed run through each year in order, starting with 1955. With lots of differing release dates floating around, I'll need to use one consistent system, and RYM is going to win this one (sorry BEA).

Here's what I'll do in each year:

a. If there are any albums in my collection that I haven't heard front to back from that year (weird I know, but there are a bunch from when I was less conscientious), I will give them a proper listen.
b. I will rate/rank the albums I've listened to from the year and award gold, silver, and bronze medals.
c. I will listen to enough new albums to expand my list to the next multiple of five. For example, if I have listened to two albums from the year, I will listen to three new ones. If I have listened to eleven albums from the year, I will listen to four new ones. But if I have listened to five albums from the year, I will listen to no new ones.

EDIT: If I have already listened to a multiple of five, I'll expand the list to reach the next one.

So, let the mad dash through time commence! I will be documenting this project in this diary and on this list.

Study In Brown by Clifford Brown & Max Roach

This was a great discovery. Just a really tight hard bop album with excellent performances from all involved. It never gets dull and it's suitably virtuosic at times. A strong 4/5 that goes right to the top of my list for 1955.

Helen Merrill by Helen Merrill

She has a smooth, rich voice, and the accompaniment provides the perfect mellow tone for nighttime listening. Vocally, Merrill is not quite as impressive as Vaughan, so while also a 3.5/5, this record goes to third on my list for 1955.

Afro-Cuban by Kenny Dorham

This album was originally released in 1955 with just 4 tracks and less than 19 minutes of music. Then in 1957 it got a longer reissue, which is the version eligible for BEA. However, I'm rating the shorter original here, which ends up being just the right amount to tantalize the listener. Three out of the four tracks are fairly peppy, with only "Lotus Flower" taking a subdued approach. Technically, Dorham's playing is very sound, and the Afro-Cuban percussion sounds great. This takes me across time and space back to Little Havana, which I visited in January. I'll award this a 4/5 and move it to #2 for the year.

1. Study In Brown - Clifford Brown And Max Roach 4/5
2. Afro-Cuban - Kenny Dorham 4/5
3. Sarah Vaughan - Sarah Vaughan 3.5/5
4. Helen Merrill - Helen Merrill 3.5/5

Now just Julie London remains for my whistle-stop tour of 1955.
