I used to be the biggest hip-hop/rap head (so much that it was the ONLY genre I listened to) until the trap movement came along (so like 2015/16 for me). I cant stand trap music.... Where did all the conscious rappers go? Kendrick and J Cole? Oh yeah, they both fell victim to the trap-game too with their latest releases.. smh
There are good conscious rap albums coming out every year, backed with all kinds of beats (boom bap, jazzy, trap, none of the above). DAMN was pretty conscious too; it just had some trap-influenced instrumentals.
What's so bad about the trap sound? I can understand "real hip-hop" sticklers being upset about the lyrical content, but when people hate on the production that baffles me. It's no more simplistic than many of the beats that form the backdrop to "real hip-hop." _________________ Join us in the canon game :) / Add me on RYM

Hip hop is criticizing other music for being too simplistic? ๐ค

Vampire Weekend released two new songs today from their upcoming album. Gotta say, they're not really hyping me. Production is a bit too clean and far from the quirkiness of previous albums - it's like you can hear Rostam's absence. Also, Ezra recycling lyrics from a previous song seems (on first listen) to be lazy. Maybe there's some cool idea behind it, but haven't gotten it yet.

2019 is off to a roaring start. Only my first listen, but really digging this. That new Deerhunter release is probably my fave so far though narrowly edging out SVE.
