Agree with you about Clapton to a large extent, but I think we're in the great minority. My favorite Clapton is Layla (the album) and when he stretched out with Cream. When his blues album, From the Cradle, came out, PBS broadcast a concert of his promoting the album and his playing seemed a little stiff and repetitive, more obvious because I could see his fingers.

I'm a big Jeff Beck fan, but that's a topic for another day. Great in his own way, but not quite in Hendrix' league.
