That's Harakiri by SD Laika

This was cool at times, but it wasn't engaging enough to really get me into it. I think it's something that I could listen to again sometime, but the initial reaction is underwhelming.

Have a relisten of Superunknown.

Tragic Songs Of Life by The Louvin Brothers

The whitest music to have ever whited. Just kidding, kinda. Anyway I'll stop being racist and speak to the performances. At first song I was like oh ok this is bridging the gap between earlier stuff and what will become the powerhouse of the Nashville music business. This is pretty cool and then I was like, eh I guess I like the Kingston Trio a little more (not same cup, but ballpark) and by the end of it I was like meh. It was nice to hear Where Did You Sleep - Nirvana made that song come alive for me, and now I've heard three renditions of it (Leadbelly being the other/original I think). Idk- clearly have mixed feelings about this one, but I did like it more than the Satan is Real album I listened to just to see how much of a joke it was. 75/3.

Back At The Chicken Shack by Jimmy Smith
This reminded me a bit of Baby Face Willette, except had a nice rotation of soloists. It was pretty good, but nothing to write home about either. 80/3.5.

Superunknown by Soundgarden

It was excellent to listen to this again after so long. A great progression from Badmotorfinger, Soundgarden diversified their sound on this album, and showed how great they could be. I got this album when it came out and listened to it quite a bit. The singles are still just as great as they were and the rest of the album is all consistent good quality. Chris Cornell is right up there in my favourite singers. Personally I probably still slightly prefer Badmotorfinger, and Down On The Upside but it's a great album that deserves it's acclaim. A high 8.5/10, 13/60 for 1994, and thanks to this revisit I am adding this to my 90's chart (it probably should have already been on there) at 62/100.

Seth, A Girl Called Dusty is good.

A Girl Called Dusty by Dusty Springfield

Pretty good covers album (probably not fair to say given 1964). Powerful and sassy voice for a white girl - can see why she tops a few lists. Stellar recording/production for the time, even if I'd prefer to listen to the Motown/etc. originals. I'd like to give it something higher but I just didn't connect. There are worse versions of Mockingbird for sure. For now...75/3? Also worthless statement: I had always thought she was a southern belle before I read up on her. I've always had the joke that the brits polish 'mericuhs turds musically (refine it), and I feel this used the wrong varnish... 🤣 - Glad I listened to it, but I'll quickly be returning to Aretha. I even dig more Dionne's version of Wishin' and Hopin', even if Dusty's charted better (and again the production is really good).

2. Maybe continue the "grunge" thing with Jar Of Flies?

Around The House by Herbert

I am familiar with Matthew Herbert from some of his remixes, and I know I've heard of few of his originals before, but I've never heard a full album. Highly enjoyable and energetic house/lounge jazz that manages to remain fresh despite being from 98. I don't think the production sounds too dated, because Herbert is kind of known for preferring organic instrumentation in his music, which is definitely true on this album as some of the little clicks and cuts on here are made by everyday household items, hence the name of the album. Dani Siciliano provides apropos vocals for the time period and genre conventions, but it doesn't really add much.

I liked this review of the album on Pitchfork. It compares Herbert with Matmos; same production theories with vastly different results. Give it a read and give this album a listen.

No Love Deep Web by Death Grips

Before this game I had listened to one Death Grips album, which I didn't really like. My feelings about the band have been pretty much stable and clear since, yet you all seem to love making me listen to more. This is the fifth album I've had to listen to for the game, and the third that I've disliked. (Exmilitary and Bottomless Pit were the two that I liked barely enough to keep in my library.)

I liked a couple tracks on No Love Deep Web, but overall it was pretty mediocre, and I wouldn't say it's a top 3 Death Grips release. I'm actually glad I didn't like it, because the cover is wack. 2.5/5.
