Pretty good album overall and easily his best. It's kind of been down hill after this though. Really funny at points. Stan is the highlight for me.

Fortunately, though, Madvillain and the like were able to keep the genre alive before Kanye gave it new birth last year with MBDTF.

I love DOOM, and Madvillainy is in my top 20, but he doesn't deserve any credit for keeping hip-hop "alive." Especially when Stankonia came out just months after this, and Jay-Z's Blueprint wasn't that far behind.

This album is alright. I'm with whoever said Slim Shady LP was better though.

Really great album . Yes it's fucked up but it's also self aware on an almost meta level and I love it for that. Better than Slim Shady LP as well (but then I also think The Eminem Show is better than Slim Shady LP Anxious )

Absolutely brilliant. Eminem at his best, he tackles the ho-hum pseudo sheltered middle class,uber-politeness, leave it to beaver/cover the kids ears mentality of the media and the middle class and actually wins. loosen up people, this is entertainment, this is magic. the beats are dope, the rhymes are some of the best, most potent, and hilarious in history. the whole thing is so clever, the majority of it is a layers of parodies and satire, just look at the hooks of these 3 songs:

Criminal: "I'm a CRIMINAL, Cause every time I write a rhyme, these people think it's a crime, to tell em what's on my mind - I guess I'm a CRIMINAL, but I don't gotta say a word, I just flip em the bird, and keep going, I don't take shit from no one"

Kill you: "I said you don't, wanna fuck with Shady (why?) Cause Shady, will fucking kill you..

Who Knew: Cause I never knew I, knew I would get this big, I never knew I, knew I'd effect this kid, I never knew I'd, get him to slit his wrist, I never knew I'd, get him to hit this bitch".

Cant you see he's mocking you, and he may not even be right but he's so good and lovable and at it he just ends up being right somehow. When ppl expected him to tone it down after his first lp, he just went more ridiculous and at the same time mocked himself and put a big mirror up to the world mocking them as well. get over the violent lyrics ya bunch of wet-blankets, its brilliant writing, plain and simple.

Drug ballad may be one of my favorites, and most would say its just a party, do drugs song but the emotional complexity he uses to describe drug life is actually kinda beautiful and his last verse giving kids and his daughter advice is so sweet and honest and probably more realistic than the advice ur parents or guidance counselor could give you.

stan is obviously one of the greatest songs ever written "and the way i am" is insane; some of the fiercest most passionate verses ever graced on a microphone. from the hook to ever last word its some of the most painfully truthful lyrics and you can tell he just poured his heart out. it sits at 19 at on my chart, 2nd best hip hop album after illmatic. if you dont like this album i probably dont like you, its a classic.

Brick wall

How much hip-hop have you actually listened to? Think I might be able to recommend you something interesting that you haven't heard before.
