Maybe his strangest album, all told. The percussion is super high in the mix, there are these occasional orchestral flourishes, off-kilter synths are piled atop each other, and any traditional funk elements are either bent into plastic, psychedelic new shapes or otherwise stripped away, leaving nothing but the skeletons of entire songs. It almost feels like an alien or a robot has attempted to put together an '80s R'n'B album based on an inherent understanding of the genre's key components. Too many of the songs are underwritten and interlude-esque for it to be considered among his top-tier masterpieces, but the production choices are often truly wild. There are traces of New Jack Swing and its stuttering swagger (or swaggering stutter) here, but they're half-hidden behind Prince's ADHD toybox approach. It's a real shame this album wasn't more influential, to be honest, as it would have led to some really freaky experiments. It cements Prince as perhaps the most idiosyncratic pure pop superstar of his (or any other) generation, but it doesn't quite sparkle like his truly great records. Still, it deserves the time and patience of those who are either unfamiliar or dismissive - it sounds like nothing before or since. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs.
