The second Drive-By Truckers of 2020 kinda sucks. There's nothing original about it every song sounds very similar. It's pretty obvious that they have nothing new to add to their catalogue, so they should just call it quits. Metro bringing pure luxury, and 21 Savage is one of the best rappers working. At one point, he was something of a joke artist; his monotonous voice and flow were fine when he was making deadpan threats of violence over eerie trap, but couldn't carry his brighter crossover attempts. His 2017 major label debut, Issa Album, with its meme-referencing title and almost stubborn lack of personality, is legitimately one of the worst rap albums I've heard in the last five years, but that misstep stands out as an anomaly in an otherwise virtually flawless discography, at least since the first Savage Mode tape. He definitely stepped up his game lyrically, adding a level of previously unseen versality, on 2018's i am > i was, one of that year's best albums (whose mid-December, end of year list season release date hampered its critical standing), and this sequel to his breakout tape is his first since both that record and also his arrest by ICE and the subsequent threat of deportation. Featuring bizarre, but well-integrated interludes from Morgan Freeman in March of the Penguins-goes-trap mode, and a couple of massive features from Drake and Young Thug, what's actually clear about this album is just how entertaining Metro and 21 are as a pair, just silky, mildly psychedelic trap beats and dispassionate shit-talk in nursery rhyme cadences. I haven't heard lots of new albums this year (still less than 100, I'd have thought), but this is one of the best hip-hop releases I've come across. It's the best trap album I've heard this year, that's for sure. Been kinda a down year for trap from what I can tell. Only other releases I really enjoyed were Uzi's and Young Dolph's.
I didn't like the first Savage Mode album at all. It was very literally one sides IMO. Every song felt the same and the hooks had no appeal to me. But I like SMII The production is flawless and the rapping is way better. But I'm afraid I haven't heard enough hip hop of 2020 to judge it's place amomg the others.

I had no reason to anticipate this release, but when I saw the album cover, I immediately felt the late 90s/early 00s energy. Will give a listen for sure.

There's going to be a new Dark Tranquillity in November. They're incredible. Every single album I've heard from Dark Tranquility had a good level artistic value. The Gleery, Damage Done, Character and Fiction are all in my opinion essential for the death metal explorer. Hell, they're better than Gorguts (although Colored Sands is superior to the whole catalogue of Dark Tranquility). The previous release, Atoma, might have been one of their worst but is was still pretty good on its own. There were only slight signs of their melodic death netal approach tiring out and they made the most of it, so I can't say I have the highest expectations for them, but there's still that chance that it ends up being a great album. 2020 has been a perfect year for metal. _________________ Do it yourself and let me play my music: https://www.besteveralbums.com/thechart.php?c=61802
