Eh, it's not that deep y'all. A lot of the best songs in the tournament were knocked out super early and The Chats didn't have the toughest competition. Plus I'd gladly take Smoko over the snooze fest of Fourth of July. Which I know makes me sound like a broken record/hater at this point but I do actually like Sufjan, Age of Adz is a huge favorite of mine and I generally love all the stuff he made in the 2000's. It's not a vote of careers or songwriting competency. Between this and that Smoko's simply the better song.

I'm fairly shocked at how far this very capable but not entirely groundbreaking punk song is getting. Granted I was singing the chorus most of the day Saturday because I couldn't get it out of my head, but even going toe to toe with Sufjan? Is the video helping it?

I voted for Sufjan because this is the best song off Carrie & Lowell but I secretly don't want a Sufjan-Sufjan finals so I guess if we can prevent that I'm not too upset.

I'm fairly shocked at how this very capable but not remotely groundbreaking folk song is considered some kind of sacred cow by certain users, a song whose failure to win this matchup must be because of some gimmick or some visual element or some imagined anti-Sufjan brigade, as opposed to a group of people just preferring one song to another with no agenda or malice or desire to upset the applecart.

The Chats songs is just more fun, and it's a sound that is actually kinda refreshing to hear these days, whereas the Sufjan song is dreary and sounds like a lot of the stuff I come across, without doing anything sonically to stand out from the pack. It's not a bad song, but it's far less memorable to me than The Chats.

I don't particularly get The Chats either. Their whole appeal is this postironic bogan rock shtick, and it took me about three more songs to get bored of it. It's fairly amusing, but also not that interesting.

4th of July is fine, but the lesser Sufjan track in the tourney, and we don't really need two of them at this point, so I'm abstaining.

Fair point that Fourth of July isn't a wildly inventive song either. For better or worse the well known songs usually end up edging out less popular ones in these tourneys and Smoko just didn't seem like the kind of song to buck that trend. But I like I said it is catchy and certainly more fun than it's competition here.

And I mentioned the video because it adds a lot to the song and also makes Smoko one of the only remaining songs with a music video. Watching a video is more interesting than staring at an album cover.

Sufjan fatigue? Anyways, yeah Smoko is nice but Fourth of July is one of the few songs that can actually bring me to tears on any listen, though again perhaps it's just more of a personal time-and-place. It's still easy vote for Sufjan, even though I take it the tournament has already grown tired of him.

I guess when words are my only form of communication, I should use them wisely.

It's not this great reverence for sufjan, rather chats seem like a gimmick/joke song strictly from a formalist viewpoint - which is common in punk, so that's fine. And also it's what people like and that's also just fine.

Sorry if I made it sound like what people like has to always be the high quality songwriting or arrangement. It can just be a pissoff song and that's fine/fun. I guess for a competition, I get a little competitive, so instead I was thinking what's the better in terms of quality songwriting or arrangement, not just, I like it. But that's even nonsense and I can shut up.

I did have a massively artistic cathartic moment today with Smoko though when I quit my job. Just kidding (maybe a point in there somewhere). But that'd be fun eh? Yeah, well this will go down on your permanent record... I'm on smoko! hehe.

Feels like I've been perpetually on Smoko for a good nine months or so now.

Fourth of July makes like the Tillamook burn

The Chats win 11-9
