Dirty Money by UGK
It's probably the UGK album I return to least, but it's still very listenable, obviously. Bun's flow was as sharp as ever here, and Pimp C's verbal imagery was just on a next level at times ("drunk off gin and Soco, if he keep on talkin' shit I'll knock his meat out his taco"), but it probably pales slightly in comparison to their strongest albums because of the bizarre production choices during the album's second half, during which there is no real cohesion, they chose to rap over instrumentals they aren't particularly suited to, and Pimp C's beats sounded overtly synthetic for the first time in his career. For an album that shows virtually zero thematic ambition (they fuck a lot and they're Southern, basically), it still feels like they were trying too hard at times, attempting to match a new millennium sheen to their golden age sensibilities in ways that now feel a little unnatural. Thankfully, Pimp C's first solo album acted as a course correction and pointed the way for the sound of their next (and last released during Pimp's lifetime) album, 2006's Underground Kingz, a triumphant double album with no total missteps that felt like the grand artistic major label statement they wanted and deserved to make, based around buttery smooth, mid-paced, guitar-led R'n'B melodies and huge, trunk-rattling low end. So, by no means is Dirty Money a failure - it's too entertaining to be written off, and its highs shine brightly - but it is an undeniably below par release from a group, who for the only time in their careers sounded unsure of who they were.
