Lights out tonight, trouble in the heartland.
Got a head-on collision, smashin in my guts man.
Im caught in a crossfire that I don't understand.
But there's one thing I know for sure girl:
I don't give a damn for the same old played out scenes
I don't give a damn for just the in-betweens.
Honey I want the heart, I want the soul, I want control right now.
-Badlands
And that's how the album begins. It's over the top, and intentionally and unapologetically so. Springsteen's having the time of his life on this one, and he doesn't care who knows it. That's what I love about Darkness.
Of course the lyrics are corny. That doesn't matter. What matters is that this is what the man likes... it's exclusively his, and he drives it home to the listeners with unbridled passion and sincerity. Nobody can match that, IMHO. And it's all caught on tape. Born To Run didn't make me a Springsteen fan. This album did. It takes guts... and it takes nerve... to pull something like this off, and make it work. He's got both.
The first time I heard it, I couldn't believe that someone was actually doing stuff like this. I became a fan instantly.
