When the artist(s) completed & recorded the work seems much more important than when the label distributed it. Just like when a Classical composer composed the work is whats most important.

After nitpicking how to decide what year an album should be assigned to, I stuck with the BEA default ranking of year of release. I very much agree with Yann that the release date is like the "birth to the world", thanks for putting it that way.

Cool idea, I used to make mixtapes/burn CDs with songs from each year for people's birthdays back in the day. I'd try to theme them too, like songs about alcohol for a 21st birthday (legal drinking age in the US) or songs about driving/road trips for 16 (driving age in the state I grew up in).
