The Big Doe Rehab by Ghostface Killah
Unlike The Pretty Toney Album, which I reviewed in this thread yesterday, this album isn't particularly well-regarded, often spoken of - if at all - as the beginning of the post-Fishscale fall-off. It's a falsehood. It doesn't have as distinct a sonic personality as either album mentioned above, but the beats are largely of the variety that could've been found on both, crisp and clean and reliant on opulent '70s soul samples and hard drums. It's also a leaner record than both, for better or worse. (I'm of the opinion that Fishscale's ambitious sprawl is simply further evidence of its genius, frankly.) Where this record excels is simple: it's the album on which Ghostface leans most heavily into story-telling mode, an album full of vivid crime scenes and exquisitely crafted mini heist films. It's an album full of genuinely hilarious lines and hyper-specific details, a record that isn't as consistently inspired as his best ('White Linen Affair', for example, is essentially a super tired list of celebrities, for no discernible reason) but one that still showcases one of music's all-time great world-builders having the time of his life ("bitches wanna see me in my rhinestone drawers"). As I mentioned in this thread yesterday, Ghost's Def Jam run is mad underrated generally, bar maybe Fishscale, and this album is the one that best proves my point. It's full of personality and sometimes touched by genius. Just another 2000s Ghostface album that suffers by dint of not being an undeniable masterpiece, it is nonetheless pure comfort food to me. I miss this Ghostface.
