I’d completely lost interest by Concrete and Gold, which I felt had taken their loud shouty radio rock to its extreme conclusion. This however, is welcomingly experimental. It’s not drastic, but they welcome dance rock. It’s a short and sharp album, and I enjoy most of it, particularly for the ways they’ve changed up the formula, and for the couple of unexpected quieter tracks on there.
This album drops Friday. Easily an early AOTY contender. This is the first album by The Staves in six years, making a triumphant return after a period of loss, heartbreak, and maturation in their lives. The album is stunning beginning to end. Their defining vocal harmonies intertwine with the folk/electric arrangements produced by the legendary John Congleton. The album explores self-acceptance and growth in the face of grief and heartbreak. Can't recommend enough.
The first time listening to this was while shoveling snow. It made my experiance much more pleasant 🤣 This is actually a very solid album!

I agree its good. On first listen it didn't blow me away but it sounded like a nice and pretty big change to their sound as well as better than the last few albums of theirs that I listened to.
OMG! I'm such an asshole. I felt for sure that wouldn't possibly be any good. But, no. I'm just a snob. This is some killer power pop. It slays the masses because it slays. #1 on this website for a reason is what I'm saying. A Charles Barkley "Guaranteee" to put you in the right mood if u let it.
MonoNeon's new one is great, relaxed, honest, disarmingly funny psych-funk, similar to Thundercat but less fussy and busy.
Also loving Chase T.'s None of This Was Supposed to Happen, which takes elements of funk and boogie and disco and g-funk and deep house and - most refreshingly - drum'n'bass to make this really comforting but ultimately still very defiant thing, earthy but detached, maybe struggling to transcend its obvious Moodymann influence but no less enjoyable for it.
Keeping my 2021 chart for releases I really enjoy, as opposed to cataloguing everything I hear, but both of these are right up there with the very best things I've stumbled across this year. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.
