Hey, I saw your guy Wobbly just came out with a new one. Should I give that a spin?
DEFINITELY! It's so good. I dunno if you heard his 2019 one, but it's using techniques from that album, he has a whole bunch of phones and tablets running synths and software to convert audio to midi, so the phones are all listening to each other and trying to reproduce what they hear, turning flawed surveillance into musical exaggeration. So on a conceptual level it deals with some real shit, but with this one in particular, it's more focused and composed, so you've got all this directly musical entertaining stuff as the vessel. I think it is an incredible achievement.
Really dug that one. Might even be underestimating it myself.
And the new Muqata'a tape is fantastic. Disappointed to see such unenthusiastic reviews for it.
Ditto both of these. Thought the Work Money Death piece was great. England's jazz scene right now is really something. I know this group is Leeds rather than London (where most of the collaborative stuff is popping up from), but it looks like there are connections.

I wish I heard what you're hearing. Feels like a massive fall-off following his debut, which took various strands of British rap and put them together in ways that were exciting and full of personality. I feel like this is a regression in every sense: the writing seems more clichéd; the songs mostly feel like half-formed sketches; the deal with AWGE seems to have pushed him towards boring, hazy, indistinct trap beats; the hyper side/chill side split kills the record's flow and invites unflattering comparisons to Danny Brown's Old. There are cool moments here, but they really are just that: moments (and those that do land are mostly found on the album's second side, making the sequencing even more frustrating). The rapping is spotty and impressionistic to the point of intangibility, his performances lack the manic intensity of his early singles (nothing here excites like 'Drug Dealer'), and the beats just feel so... American? (That is, when they aren't just retreads of stuff from the last record.) I hope it grows on me, but it feels like one of those rapper moves where an artist attempts to "grow" or "mature" but actually just ends up sanding away their distinctive edges and becoming boring. It's not even the best hip-hop release of today (shouts to Chris Crack), let alone 2021 (shouts to DaBoii). _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.
Yeah I can't lie, I was really high last night and the first listen was maybe a bit exaggerated because of it.
I listened twice more today and it's not the best hip-hop album of the year (Madlib will remain with that title atm), but its still a solid project. I agree the production definitely sounds more "American" for a UK hip-hop project, but overall it sounds a more polished than I remember his debut sounding. Some of it maybe slightly overblown but honestly none of the production choices bore me or turn me off of certain tracks. Performance wise I like slowthai here and the guest features. The second half especially we get some nice introspection and reflective moments.
