What i wonder about is how it may over time change it. |
My guess for the future is that albums will be short-lived, not well remembered in time. A lot a novelty, sessions of songs, yes, all poured in the artist "songbook". |
But why not continue to call these sessions of songs an album? Surely albums will survive as long as the word “album” survives. |
I don't really know, that's why I ask for you guys streaming users: are album pages (whatever they're callled) popular? Where do you go to first : your personal best-of of an artist or the albums page? Do people even still do best of a particular artist or just thematic playlits, or both?

Well, I personally listen to way more albums than playlists or singles on streaming services (though yeah this is an album site and I'm a middle aged music listener so I'm not going to represent the youth in any way really!) I would guess there has been something of a dip in album listening since the advent of streaming services, but yeah, I think the album page is enough for people to still get attached to. Like DommeDamian said, young people still seem to get excited by albums.
I'm guessing physical versions will continue to become less popular, even niche, but I reckon there will an increase in more elaborately designed special edition physical versions of albums. This will aim to suit people who really want the physical object to attach to a special album. I think Radiohead are trying something like this with KID A MNESIA.
