No idea what I think of it yet. It's unexpectedly odd, but at least it looks better than the last few years. I listened to a lot of music in 2021, and I still don't think I've heard half of these. Haven't even heard of the #1. No idea when that came out.
I like the surprise-ish choices. Very glad with the placement of White Dress. I think it's one of Lana's best.
Off to go find a playlist somewhere.

Probably their best AOTY list in some years, which surprised me considering how negative they've been recently. Still, a bizarre #1. Not sure what's up there. I didn't think much of that record at all bar one track.

The publications I mentioned anyway (and when I wrote it, I was mostly thinking of what's being omitted). Quietus aside.
Sufjan, JPEGMAFIA, Genesis Owusu, Godspeed You!, Nick Cave, Bruno Pernadas and Darkside aren't really popping up too much. And the singles being picked are favouring a certain way too. Not seeing tracks like Injury Reserve's Knees or Magdalena Bay's Secrets... JB's Posing In Bondage... Silk Sonic's Smokin Out the Window, Point And Kill, etc. With the one-song-per-artist vibe, I found a lot are picking the same tracks from the pool.

Giving a skim at their previous lists (and eschewing my personal taste for one sec), it's... I mean... I don't want to be a grump or anything, but that's their weakest/strangest/randomest choice for a #1 of the year ever, right? I thought they might even regret giving it such a high score in the first place. It's okay I guess, but it's still just a somewhat average 7-track R&B EP that's been stretched way too far. I gave it two spins near the beginning of the year and haven't bothered with it since because the project has an insane amount of fat. I'll give it another go later today, maybe I'm missing something, but I... don't think I really want to 🤣
Regardless, it's a good list. Nice surprises along the way. I had no idea what was going to come out on top. Review-wise, they weren't too hot on most of the best records throughout the year. _________________ Doubles & Conch

I feel the opposite about Heaux Tales. I'm happily surprised, though I am surprised, that is keeps topping all of these year end lists. I thought it was a really wonderful and personal record, listened to it a lot throughout January. It was my #1 for at least a month. Lost Ones is haunting and Pick Up Your Feelings slaps. The interviews with all of the women throughout are so sincere and honest in how they talk about sex and relationships with men, and how Sullivan managed to connect the songs to the interviews makes for a beautiful arc.
I honestly thought the album was going to be rather forgotten - released the first week of January!! I'm thinking NPR launched the momentum for this album consistently hitting so high on the lists, that and the Soul Train surprise. So yeah, big year-end surprise lists that I'm thinking have much to do with momentum and representation. But I'm here for it, it was an under-appreciated record that deserves recognition.
