Loads of great stuff and, like I said, tons of great metal. Artillery, Entombed, Obituary, Bathory, all had great albums. And some excellent underrated hair metal too - Firehouse's S/T is fabulous, there's Trixter, there's Slaughter's Stick it To Ya, there's Damn Yankees' S/T, tons of stuff _________________ Progressive Rock
And my top 10 is:
1. Swagger - The Blue Aeroplanes (I know, I always have to pick something nobody else likes)
2. Blue Sky Mining - Midnight Oil (their best)
3. Goo - Sonic Youth (much more agreement here)
4. Reading, Writing & Arithmetic - The Sundays (this album is still so good)
5. Pod - The Breeders (and the Breeders win)
6. Bossanova - The Pixies (and the Pixies only second)
7. Eroica - Wendy & Lisa (brash statement: I can't think of a Prince record better than this)
8. Black Sheets Of Rain - Bob Mould (A bitter and very personal album)
9. Pastoral Hide And seek - The Gun Club (here they are Repo and to me their second best just behind Miami)
10. Any Gas Faster - The Bevis Frond (discover this one)
And I agree with Gowi, this was a very good year so there were much more other very good albums amongst which a lot already quoted by other people.
Definitely a good year! My own top 6 here are practically interchangeable, ranking-wise. And I had to leave out albums like Goo and Reading, Writing & Arithmetic, plus Crawdaddy by the Darling Buds and The Chameleons' Tony Fletcher Walked on Water. Oh well! 🙁

I am going to have to go through this from Genre to Genre Starting with Heavy Metal of Course.
1. Passion and Warfare - Steve Vai (Shredding with Elecletic Songwright more focused on painting a beautiful canvas than just rocking out.)
Choice Cut - Sisters Aesthetic and Melody over Shredding wins out on this song.
2. Judas Priest - Painkiller (Priest's best Album, Their peak and probably the apex.)
Choice Cut - Other than the Title Track? Nightcrawler Simple for it's badass riffage and drum work.
3. No Smoke without Fire - Anthem (Japanese Painkiller...Part 1.)
Choice Cut - Shadow Walk BECAUSE GODDAMN THAT RIFF!
4. Shotgun Justice - Razor (Just the name alone gives me sign of it's Insane Aggression.)
Choice Cut - Meaning of Pain Good Riff work and Bob Reid showing his vocal chops, with a breakneck pace to match
5. Rust in Peace - Megadeth (Angry Ginger at his angriest and finest, Marty Friedman is his best guitarist.)
Choice Cut - Holy Wars I don't need to explain why
6. Cowboys from Hell - Pantera (My personal opinion on their style change aside...as Power Metal is still my favorite from this band...These riffs on this album still kill)

7. Twisted into Form - Forbidden (Technical Thrash Metal's apex, and probably where the genre should've stopped.)
Choice Cut - Out of Body (Out of Mind) Riffage out of this mind connected with the amazing subject matter and confidence is what make this song work more than it really should.
8. Eclipse - Yngwie Malmsteen (His Best Singer on their best album together, Yngwie's focus on Ballads means he's not noodling all day...Should've paid Goran Edman.)
Choice Cut - Faultline The Closest that Yngwie Has gotten to the Eclectic song stylings of Steve Vai, and mostly because he had Goran telling him how you can actually WRITE a song like this and still rock out.
9. Up From The Ashes - Don Dokken (Dokken's Solo Album and he got the fucking Justice League of a Lineup to do it. Jon Noram and Mikkey Dee in the same fucking band...nuff said.)
Choice Cut - Crash N' Burn Melodic as it should be and a good opening track to get you back into the Classic Dokken sound with the twist this justice league of a band is going to give you.
10. TYR - Black Sabbath (My Personal favorite of the 90's Sabbath Selection...not that there is much to go by.)
Choice Cut - Sabbath Stones The Power Metal song that Sabbath fans wanted since Dio Left.[/url]

First Take: What if Husker Du were a garage rock band in the 60s, died and collectively came back to life as Matthew Sweet in .... 1990!
If you like this one check out his other albums as well. There are many but nearly every one is high quality. I only discovered the man (Nick Saloman is the main man behind the band) only a few years ago as well and it made me immediately want to discover the rest of his discography and it was a real adventure.
The Setting: "I personally discovered Judas Priest around ’78,” Rolf Kasparek, lead vocalist & guitarist of Running Wild, continues on the group that gave him his band's name. “They were on a TV show called ‘Rock Forever’ and I wanted to get their record, so I went to the shop and you couldn’t buy ‘Killing Machine’ so I brought ‘Sin After Sin’ and a week after I bought ‘Stained Class’ and around ’79 the live album came out <Ed. Note: Unleashed In The East>, and I just brought it immediately. I was so blown away, it was such a great sound. I thought, I wanna do that,” Rolf smiles. “We didn’t try to copy Judas Priest,we were not that good" <Ed Note: emphasis mine>, "so we had to find our own way!"
The Listen: Conjure 80s Metal in your heads. Think about all the bands that mattered back then... Priest, Metallica, Motley Crue, Venom, Accept, etc. Good! Now strip away all the outer layers. All the sub-genres. All the stylings. The ridiculous over-the-top imagery. Glam, Black, Death, Thrash, NWOBHM. Ok! Now take it ONE step further and strip out location – Canada, England, USA, Japan. And THIS album - Gates To Purgatory - is what you get - concentrated, balled-up into-a-fist '80s Metal. It ain’t fast. And it sure ain’t pretty. BUT like steel wool, it gets the dirty job done. Keeping your domicile safe from the rat strewn streets just outside. You see, rats can’t chew through steel wool. Well they can, if you want to get technical about it. BUT, it’s sort of a kamikaze mission. As with each chew, the steel wool slices though the soft mucosa of their mouth, and eventually, even if they make it though, they bleed out within days. So, yeah. Steel wool is for keeping rodent scum from doing a little B&E. And I'm telling ya, in 1984, before hey hit the high seas, Running Wild were the steel wool of the metal world's tool shop!
The Verdict: Teutonic crushing mayhem. And the true sequel to Accept's Restless & Wild. They're at the slower end of the speed metal terrain, but I actually think that helps their cause. Hulk like to SMASH to it! This is what he listened to before matches on Sakaar!
