Non-English lyrics in the Latin alphabet are fine and exist on the site, but lyrics using non-Latin alphabets will be difficult for most BEA visitors to read. An English translation would not have physically been used in the track and so wouldn’t be authentic, but would probably be more accessible to visitors. However, this would be inconsistent with the treatment of other non-English titles which are presented natively. Transliterated text is phonetically correct but is less meaningful if you don’t understand the underlying language so translated text is probably preferred as it’s more accessible to most site visitors, but would probably need to be presented alongside the original text for context (but then we are going to hit problems with the 80 character limit because both the translation and original text would be included in the total and they’d probably look a bit untidy in the site masthead).

Yes, that would be the format, but really the whole point of having the quotes in the masthead is for them to be easy to read which is going to be especially difficult for non-Latin quotes. There’s no harm in putting them forward alongside the translated text, but the presentation will look a bit awkward and having hovers etc doesn’t change that..

It is from the opera "Turandot" written by Puccini and was released on 25th April, 1926. Of course there are records which performed the opera: Zubin Mehta / John Alldis Choir / London Philharmonic Orchestra, so that means the quote counts?
E.g. here are the well-known [first 2 lines] written by Friedrich Schiller in 1785 and later be used in Beethoven's Ode to Joy, completed in 1824:
18? "Freude, schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium" - Ludwig van Beethoven ("Ode to Joy", 9th Symphony, 4th Movement) (Characters: 49) |
I guess opera lyrics would be OK (assuming they also exist as recorded works). BEA usually credits the artist performing the work which would look a bit strange in the case of opera as the same opera could be performed by different artists, so the composer should probably be listed instead.
