In the background, making quite a few changes for the next site update and currently reviewing the presentation of ratings. Currently, BEA uses a five star rating system with half star increments (10 options to choose from) and then presents the rating out of 100.

Just wanted to gauge if anyone is particularly attached to how things currently are, or would prefer to see a different system? The site could allow you to choose a rating out of 5, 10 or 100 without changing the meaning of each rating (so long as the granularity remains the same). I think a star-based system will probably more than likely remain as it's globally familiar, but just with updated presentation.

I suspect it would be way too much trouble to allow people to type in exact numbers like "77" or 83" while also keeping the clickable stars, but barring that, I'd keep it the way it is.

Personally. When I look at ratings (though I don't rely on them for much, really), the only ones I will pay any attention to are the 1 to 5 star ratings. Everything else is just noise.

I actually really dislike the use of exact numbers 1-100. When I see something rated a 73 or an 88, I can't help but feel like it's more of a made up number than anything else. I don't think rating albums should be that detailed.

As an aside...I know it's low priority...but years ago, a suggestion was floated about the possibility of badges on albums that are in your collection, wishlist, etc? Just wondering if that's still on the list. Would be helpful for those with lists that are long...

Yes, would be nice to make ratings more granular as has been raised in the past, but difficult to do with the current layout as not enough space. It would definitely make a nice improvement though.

Iโ€™m probably also of the same mind, but some people enjoy precise numbers and have their own rating systems. It wouldnโ€™t have a material impact on the averages if we did this as we already have increments of 10 so donโ€™t see it causing big problems (implementation itself is a different issue).

Albums are indicated as in collection etc within charts and at the bottom of each album page, where else would you like to see this info? (Happy to add).

I guess just maybe as something more prominent and easy to spot. My thought was a badge that would show next to the album title on both the album page, as well as on charts and the albums on the artist page. Forum posts that have album links as well. I've kind of reached a number with my collection (and an age ๐Ÿค ) that I see albums and have to ask myself if I have it or not...and then I have to look it up on my spreadsheet. And maybe the badge could link to the collection or wishlist or listened. It would just kinda be a cool and helpful thing to have. I understand if it's a lot of work...not a priority. But just thought I'd ask.

At the moment, each chart contains an add/remove link showing whether an album is in your collection. We could maybe add an extra link/graphic here to make it more obvious:

Maybe at the top of each album page, we could repeat some of the stuff that's currently in the 'Your feedback' section at the bottom of each album page:

Could merge into where the album details are currently displayed:

However, adding these types of links to the forums would require customisation to allow 'BEA links' to display differently depending on whether you wanted to see collection info or not (or any other additional info), but could be linked together with the 'Show collectors summary' preference. If we did this, the 'Insert BEA link' would have to become its own tag to allow it to be rendered dynamically and other people might then lose the ability to format the content ('Insert BEA link' returns raw img and url tags which people are able to rearrange but if a bespoke tag was used, the raw content would be hidden). This is probably a bigger change than the two others, but could be added down the line.

100. That has always been my wet dream. As shown in your example, BEA can display a rating like 92 for an album or a track, I cannot. For those who want fewer options: you can still make your own limitations within that frame, I guess.

Displaying a rating and interacting with it (to adjust it) are two separate problems as can be seen with today's issue (5 granularity) and quite complex when you add touch screens/smaller form factors into the equation. Not going to go that far right now with current phase of work (although I'd also like to see this at some stage), I think to do that would require a different rating interface (just giving the site new lipstick rather than a facelift at the moment, but will have more time next year to dive into this).
