I used to have a big CD collection but when I moved to an apartment I had to give away most of my collection. That of course combined with the fact that there is so much music available to me with my Apple Music account this means that most of the music I listen to is via Apple Music (with the disadvantage of the sound quality but also that has improved) which also allows me to discover lots and lots of new music (maybe a bit too much but that's maybe another topic of discussion).
This introduction to state that ratings of individual tracks are for me the most efficient way to rank my albums (together with extra points for originality and unity of the album and to make playlists also because of the fact that I have a bad memory so for me ratings are very important. I know that this doesn't necessarily produces the rankings that I would have if I would really sort them individually on a qualitative level but I know I'm not far off.
That being said, ratings from other people are rarely the way to discover new music I would like. Here I rely mostly on comments from people whose taste I appreciate.

When I first started using this site, I didn't bother rating the tracks. But that's because I was rating/ranking albums I was already pretty familiar with. But at this point, I'm exploring new albums and deeper cuts, and listening to things I've never even heard before. So the only way I can keep track of how good an album really is, is by rating the tracks (yes I can give the album a star rating, but how do you remember which 7/10 album is better when you have 30 of them?). From what I've seen, most users also rate the tracks they know. The "hits", even on popular albums, might have double or triple the ratings that the non-hits/singles have. I think that's fine, especially for the casual person.
If you're asking for a way for a user to make a list (or lists) of best tracks, like top 100 tracks from the 80's, I think that would be fine, but people are going to use the info and tools on this site in different ways.
