NO. Don't kill people for an ipod. That's bad mkay... If you're going down the illegal road, rob people (steal enough money to buy a new ipod).

If you don't want to do anything illegal, do one of the following:
- quietly sing a song you have stuck in your head, or hum it (I do the latter quite often.. people will look at you, but that's the worst that will happen)
- watch people... observe what they do. make up stories about them. it'll be fun, i promise.
- make a scene.. start screaming or something. pretend you're having a nervous breakdown. now i had never tried anything like that but i often wonder how people would react to something like that
- or just talk to people.. some girls perhaps (here's another thing i never try )

if you have a laptop just bring that and some phones with you, but you would likely have to be seated or keep it propped open in your bag with something. I'm pretty sure you can get a personal radio, or maybe even a mp3 player that holds around 2-3 hours of music, for less than $20 for a quick fix

Get a subscription to The Atlantic and read it on your commute, it's a really good magazine.

UPDATE: Having returned to Mordor with the one ring, I cast it into the fiery pits of mount doom...I brought my ipod to the apple store and luckily was exactly two days from the one year warranty expiring so they gave me a brand new one for free. It lacks the Billy Bragg quote inscribed on the back my girlfriend gave it to me with, but you can't win em all I guess
