Just pushed an August site update live which maintains the continuous monthly update cycle for the past year. The current focus remains on surfacing the human aspects of the site and deepening user engagement to counter the threat of AI. The July site update, a few weeks ago, laid important groundwork for the biggest functional improvements in a single update on BEA for quite a while.
Threaded comments
Threaded comments are now live on the album\artist\chart pages to replace the previous 'flat' layout and encourage more debate (you can now reply directly to individual comments). The restriction has now also been removed on deleting/editing older comments with subsequent replies (now that threaded discussions are possible it is no longer necessary). Direct replies will only be notified to the immediate parent author and respecting any existing notification preferences. (N.B. only parent comments are eligible to appear in aggregate charts to encourage reviews at the top level). The threaded comment functionality will be enhanced over the next few updates with some of the other items on the roadmap.
Forum mentions
You can now mention other users in forum posts. This only took 11 years to get around to, but if a user is mentioned in a post they will get an email or browser notification (if they subscribe to receive them). You can update your profile to receive these notifications (which are disabled by default for existing users). Mentions will also appear in your activity stream, on your profile page, and on the latest activities page.
To mention somebody in a forum post, use the following BBCode:
| Code: | | [mention]username[/mention] |
and the mention will be displayed as e.g. @albummaster
Notification history
Your recent notification history is now displayed at the bottom of the home page (including indicating whether a notification was sent via browser or email). You can manage your notification preferences from your profile page. (N.B. If you have more than one browser subscribed to updates, multiple alerts may be shown for some notifications).
Aggregate chart climbers, fallers, new entries and leavers
Chart movements are now displayed on the year, decade and overall charts, showing climbers, fallers, new entries and albums that have left the chart (thanks to a suggestion from 8 years ago). You can configure both the time period and chart subset to see how the rankings have changed over time.
Smaller changes
- Invalid release date threshold raised to the top 10,000 albums (final threshold) (just ~300 albums left in the queue to do)
- Validate clicking 'Yes' if you approve these changes on admin pages
- Fix bug where draft post gets deleted if user becomes logged out while editing it
- Randomise comments in aggregate charts to keep them fresh on each visit
- Tidy up validation warnings/info on admin album page for albums with less than five tracks
- Fix incorrect default title on latest releases page
- Allow guest users to view today's forum posts without going to a login screen
- Migrated username search in PMs etc to autocomplete (to get rid of legacy popup form)
- Improved responsiveness of primary navigation
- Migrated more pages to friendly URLs
Apologies if your own suggestion(s) haven't been completed (yet), there are roughly 300 changes on the backlog and those changes need to be prioritised. Others will be gotten around to in time, but can't work fast enough in the time I have available. Hopefully completing some of the bigger changes will then allow me to go back and tackle some of the ones that have been hanging around a while longer.
There's plenty more happening in the background and once the summer lull is over, hoping that the site gets a decent boost in activity following these (and other forthcoming) changes.

Not to be greedy or anything, but... where's the Dark Mode setting? I'm not seeing it on the Edit Profile page.

If you go to the bottom of the right-side top menu, you can flip it on/off from there (still needs more refining in places)
