Now Pat's What I Call Music! - Music Diaries

Patman360 · 2024-09-05T19:05:38-04:00

Arguably the stupidest thing I've done on here since I ranked all the Bond theme songs, but I'm back to having time for music so I'm setting out on a new venture! Yes, that's right, listening to and ranking the Now That's What I Call Music! albums, one track at time. I recently got shown a full playlist of all the Now albums and it brought up a lot of nostalgia (the 50's/60's Now album were early albums for me in my musical journey...). Anyway, while digging through the list I came across several bangers (and several 'non-bangers'), and it's inspired to dig through the archives, one song a day, every day, for the foreseeable future. Am I crazy? Yes, absolutely, but anyway, let's crack on! 1 Phil Collins - You Can't Hurry Love https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9IwBJYTwQ0 Starting us off in 1983, with the original version of Now, is Phil Collins's covering The Supremes, quite enjoy this a lot in all honesty. Have been on a bit of a Genesis rediscovery journey of late and naturally that leads into Phil and his solo stuff. The man does make a good pop hit every so often (Easy Lover, dope), and I love the fact that he doesn't look remotely like a popstar (strikes me as more of an Eastenders character, plus he's got the name). Was on his 1982 album, Hello, I Must Be Going, which has made it onto a year chart of mine, and anyway, as the first song up, straight to number one with a bullet. Ranking: 1. Phil Collins -You Can't Hurry Love (Now 1)

Spice Girls - Mama

Link

For the 3rd straight album, the Spice Girls kick us off, showing how huge they were in the UK in the late 90's.

This would be the year they'd even get their own movie, Spiceworld, what a time it was.

This is good, one of the last singles off their debut album, more their take on a ballad than the out and out pop hits of earlier singles, but still part of a pretty good run they had.

Texas - Say What You Want

Link

Another good one, that falls slightly outside the top 200.

Texas, from Scotland had already had 3 albums out in the early 90's before this hit, the lead single of their 4th, came along and blew everything else they'd done out of the water.

Perfect radio rock, alt and pop rock that was right at home in the late 90's, still all over the radio these days.

The Beautiful South - Don't Marry Her

Link

The follow up single to Rotterdam, off the same album, which featured on NOW 35 recently.

Both are solid and both are very much the same to me, maybe I prefer this one slightly if I had to pick, which I suppose I do, given how crazy this whole thing now is.

No Doubt - Don't Speak

Link

No Doubt had been around a bit at this stage, this being off their 3rd album, Tragic Kingdom (which I still own a copy of).

Their first 2 albums didn't have any major hits, but Just a Girl opened that door in 1995 and Don't Speak, the 3rd single off the album was an even bigger hit, a huge number 1 that stills get play a lot nowadays and I think holds up well.

Pop rock I suppose if you had to put a moniker on it but I've never been quite sure where No Doubt fall exactly, it's top 200 material for sure.

White Town - Your Woman

Link

A complete one out of leftfield, Jyoti Mishra, a British-Indian musician, going under the name of White Town, came out with this, the lead single off his second album, Women in Technology in 1997, with elements funk, dance, house, folk and a sprinkle of alternative on top of that.

The only success he ever really had, it's weirdly hypnotic, and shows up now and again.

Can't place my hand on why I like it, but here we are.

The Blueboy - Remember Me

Link

The Blueboy (or Blue Boy), both titles seemed to be used, is Scottish DJ Lex Blackmore, who put out only 3 tracks between 1995-97, this being the only success.

It's pretty great though, dance funk that finds a way to make you move, I really really like it.

Blue Boy played toured with the Shamen back in 1991 also, good fun this.

Jamiroquai - Virtual Insanity

Link

One here that needs no explanation, Jamiroquai's big hit.

Whilst not initially huge, it's staying power has shone through no doubt.

A fun and funky time.

Robert Miles - One & One (feat. Maria Nayler)

Link

The 3rd and final single off Robert Miles' debut album, think I discussed it a bit when Children, his big hit was out.

This one features vocals from British trance singer Maria Nayler, who contributed to a few different tracks here and there down the years.

Just not really my thing, one of his last really big successes though.

George Michael - Spinning the Wheel (Forthright Edit)

Link

Spinning the Wheel was the follow up single to Fastlove off his Older album, and like that, it appears here in the form of a Forthright Edit.

I imagine it works better at a club in the 90's than where I am now, sitting at my kitchen table having tea.

Just doesn't work for me really.
